Sorry guys that I didn't post this right away but my DSL has been down AGAIN. It's fixed now! No more DSL!

The really short version for now is that the mod was worth a tenth and one MPH in the quarter in my 92. I'm kinda surprised after seeing the dyno numbers posted here: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/performance-paddock/350856-m104-3-4-amg-dyno-without-timing-trick.html, but that's what I ended up with after EXTENSIVE testing. Again, pulling the resistor gave a small GAIN in performance for my 92, documented at the track.

I got 19 runs in, which I'm sure is a record for me at any track going all the way back to 1978!

There is LOTS to talk about though. I'll probably have to post the info in stages cause I'm such a slow typer.

It's really difficult to quantify such a small gain when there are so many other variables at play in any given run, but after 19 runs I feel confident in my findings. Enough so that for me, the resistor stays out! You all can do your own testing and do what you want! I don't think there is anybody else here in this giant thread who has actually tested this mod at the drag strip, so at the very least, I should be given some credit for that. It also means that what I have to say on this subject should be given some serious consideration! At least as far as 92s go.

The smallness of the gain is to be expected when you consider that the mod is only adding six degrees of advance, assuming that the pro-mod folks are right. So, in a best case scenerio, you're still only gaining six degrees of advance. To be honest, that probably helps more in the low-end torque department than anything else. My 88 and 89 both have second gear start, so I'm always lugging them. This is why I can more easily feel the low-end torque increase in those cars. That's why I never track tested the mod in those cars. I can tell without a doubt that they run better! My 92 though has first gear start, which makes it harder to feel the gain. Hence the track testing.

The six degree gain very likely helps with fuel economy as well but my driving habits are far too varied for me to be able to quantify that.

So it's not much of a gain, but it's a gain nonetheless, and definitely worth it, especially when you consider the cost and amount of time involved! It's also definitely worth it when you consider that there is no fuel economy penalty! Far too many mods carry with them a fuel economy penalty. I'm convinced that my fuel economy is actually better with the resistor removed, but as I said, I can't quantify that. Far too many other variables there!

Sorry I can't post everything right now, I just wanted to at least post the highlighs so you all wouldn't be kept waiting any longer.

Much more info, data, and actual numbers coming as time allows!

Gentle reminder: This gain from the "resistor mod" is only present on certain years and models. It does not apply to every car with an M103 engine.

Yes, that's one of the reasons why I say that everybody should perform their own testing, either at the track or on the dyno.

Sadly, hardly anybody is doing that.

More info, data, and numbers coming when I get a chance.

Regards,
Eric

Nope. CIS/E cars only...and IIRC, I never did dig on my .960 equipped cars to see if this was still there. 50/50..;-)

Nothing you can do to (easily) boost power on a 92 M119.970 which has LH-SFI electronic injection. I sell a modified chip which eliminates the cold-upshift delay, increase rev limit slightly, and removes the top speed limiter... but doesn't increase power one iota. Sorry.

M119.960 engines have that resistor plugged directly into the EZL. It's a round plug that usually has green writing on it.

I've never tried messing with it, but you could probably take a little more risk and get the max. advancement without hurting the motor since it has knock sensors.

It's outside the scope of this thread but briefly, we experimented with those pills and found that they only help if the car is really warm, I.E. the non-cat pill doesn't pull timing when the engine is hot like the pill for the cat equipped cars do. Since I found out a long time ago that I run my quickest E/Ts with my M119 stone cold the pills aren't a factor for me.

He lives! How are you Dave! I finally brought Benzer4 to our new place of residence (after spending several years in storage) just a few days ago. If you'll PM me your address, I'll send you some headlight wipers/panels/motors!

Derp..you are correct sir! And usually they show as defective when you scan the can w/ HHT..;-)

And yes, I suspect you could go a might bit aggressive w/ the knock sensors as back up protection/plan B!

I bet GSXR has the chart correlating trim plug to timing retard etc..seems right up his alley

Please Gixer, let's do the PM route.

The last time I went to the drag strip was three years ago when I took Benzer5. You already know about that day but here is the single post report again: Anybody up for some 1/4 mile action?

I just have too much going on now. The frosting on the cake though is that my wife is fighting breast cancer and is on chemo that is leaving her unable to do much of anything. Guess who has to take up the slack? And don't forget we have a now 3 year old male tyrant to deal with. Needless to say, life sucks right now. I am very determined to return to racing though and the older two kids want to go now too! They're old enough now. Just need life to ease up on us a bit. The law of averages dictates that it can't stay bunk forever!
