Guido,

They're $450 a set from PUMA. Several sets are on order, so they should be in stock the first week of April.

More detail can be found at the "E-code Lights" thread

Guido- call Bekkers Imports. When I ordered my E500 euro headlamps, they sent me 500E (pre-1994) euro headlamps instead.

I went with the E500 euro headlamps because I MIGHT change the hood (haven't decided yet). If I don't get the 1994+ hood, I could just order the pre-1994 headlamp glass so it doesn't have the grill identation.

fad,

Thanks for posting the installation requirements, looks like a simple changeover.

I've been reading this post further and was confused by the differences between the E500 and 500E lights. Do your 94 E500 lights also have an indentation for the larger grill. If the indentation exists, are the lenses replaceable for these lights.

Since the car I'm getting is a 92 I it has the older style grill and I just wanted to make sure everything looked correct. Thanks again for the help.

Hi Placo-

To get a pic display/idea of the '94 style lights on a pre '94 500e, I'd suggest searching for pics on Neil's 500e (blackberry). Neil put the '94 style lights on his '93...you'll get the idea of the look from his great pics. There' a couple other early W124 owners that have did the same thing and are OK with the aesthetics- so it appears to be personal preference on whether this is Ok or not.

The '94 EOM Bosch headlight units do have an added curvature line fitting it to the curve of a '94 hood, but in your '92 the light unit itself will still fits the entire realm of the '92-'93 hoods....you'll get the idea when you look at Neil's set-up.

It's my understanding that brand spanking new '92 DOT OEM Bosch headlight units are readily available for purchasing but are very very expensive (~$6-700/pair wholesale). This would be the best plug-and-play solution for restoring OEM efficiency to your '92 (though- the '94 OEM Bosch units offers significantly better lighting vs. the '93/'92 set-up). The second choice for a plug and play solution is naturally the '94 OEM units.

I've heard both schools of thought regarding replacing the DOT OEM Bosch glass faces on the '94 units. One school says, 'not replaceable' and the other schools says, 'replaceable' - - 'but must be very very very cautious' when removing the old lense 'not to break the plastic tabs holding the lense to the unit'. I'm inclined to believe that they were glued on by DOT requirements of that time so owners wouldn't just replace the glass with the e-code ones- - since the DOT '94's are constructed quite closely to the e-codes anyways.

Hi Guido-
Yes, I certainly lucked out with my E-codes from PUMA. It was $$$ well spend and they look like big rectangular diamonds on the front of the car. I understand that PUMA does sell the '92 and '93 Hella E-codes for the 500e and that they are about $100 cheaper than the '94 Hella E-codes (due to lense differences). I can pass my reccomendation on the Hella e-code product from PUMA. Sorry to hear you got bumped a little on the product from mercedesshop. Gosh with all that performance in your car...you gotta get your lighting together!!!

good luck!

Wasn't mercedeshsop fault. It was the wholesaler they were using. You know one day. We stil have to do a oil cooler setup
Don't you agree. From me selling my wiper filler panels. I'm saving the money to purchase the Puma lights sounds like a good deal. How much did shipping cost you FAD.

See ya guido.

Yeah Guido- summertime weekend for the oil cooler set up? I'll drive down for the weekend.

The shipping on the lights from memory was next to nada (less than $20?).

Placo1,

Until I read this, I had nearly forgotten how excited I was in finding my 92' 500E Pearl Black with Black box stock. I passed in in a parking lot with my daughter in the car. We followed, pulled up at a stop light, talked, she put her husband on the cell phone and we cut a deal. I posted a more elaborate version after first finding this site some 15 months ago.

I can't decide which I have enjoyed more, the car or this site.

But the the combination is "the ride of your life".

Thanks for the vicarious revisit.

Dwight,

I'm glad to hear that this post was able to bring back some nostalgic wonderful memories. Buying cars is always fun but finding and buying your dream car is beyond description. (Any true car nut can tell you that). I can't wait until I can have my baby in the garage with a fresh coat of wax!

-fad,

I was thinking about the install of the 94 E-Code lights and the wiper swap you suggested. I'm confused though, after looking carefully at the 92 and 94 500E/E500 light and wiper setup and I think I missed something. If I swapped the wiper arms the motor rotation on the 92's would cause a problem. The motor rotates in the opposite direction causing the wiper to push down into the bumper rather than up. Is there an easy way to reverse the motor direction?

If i didn't swap over the wipers and it only cleaned the low beam lights it would be acceptable as long as the wiper doesn't contact any painted surfaces.

It's hard picturing everything when I don't have the car yet so if I'm off base forgive me. But if not whats the solution? Thanks for the help. I'll be emailing you soon regarding the lights, I might be able to pick them up on the way back from Seattle.

Thanks
Afshin

I have Bosch European headlights on my 1993 500E, with a 1994 E500 hood. You can see them on my website...

Scott- thanks for sharing your pics again- and again big kudos on your 500e

...do your Bosch E-code units have a chrome inner framing around the reg drive lights? are the City Lights hooked operating?

also, do your Bosch E-code units have the Aux Driving Light in-set?

I ask, 'cause the pics aren't clear on my PC so it appears that your's maybe the regular Bosch W124 e-codes (w/ inner set fog lamps and absent 500e/e500 chroming treatment).???

Indeed, my E-codes lack the chrome treatment (others, here, have chrome-taped theirs, I believe, with excellent results); I'm just waiting for an ample window of opportunity... since I'm a workaholic, these days!

Thank you very much for your compliment - I may never get married - but I will NEVER part with my 500E, under ANY circumstances (just please don't tell my girlfriend)!!!

; )
