500E skid-plate with ducts!

Anyone interested in a group purchase of a 500E custom made stainless-steel skid-plate with the proper ducting & venting for approx. $325.

This replaces the plastic belly-pan which provides NO PROTECTION for the oil-pan. Cheap insurance for a $16K motor.

Hopefully I'll have a prototype available within the next two weeks.

Let me know ASAP.

Thanks,
:-) neil

Hi Neil- nice project!

Will the skid plate be in aluminum?

What will be the thickness and weight vs. OEM plastic?

Fad- you didn't read the posting very well regarding the material did you?

It will be stainless steel 304 alloy(no painting needed), weight est. 30-32 lbs, and 14 gauge thick (0.075-inch).

Anyone else up for one?

BTW- I think the OEM plastic belly pan weighs no more than 3-lbs.

Also, for all other 6-cylinder W124's cars, Mercedes makes their own skid-plate. Too bad it doesn't fit nor function well (no scoops or ventilation) for the 500E.

Does anyone know if the 400E uses the same bellypan as the 500E?

I was going to interject some humor by saying I don't normally off-road rally the 500E and wouldn't see the need for a solid skid plate but I see now, after remembering driving in San Fran last Dec, that it's a good idea for you folks in that area.

Wouldn't T-6 be lighter and stronger?

SS engine encapsulation panel.

Hi Neil go for it I'm in. The pic you got on there . Those one's are heavy. I seen them on early 4 matic cars and some grey market jobs. Stainless would be pretty cool. Thats extra weight for the car. But its cheap insurance so I'm in. Toobad you can't have another vent coming off the exsisting one to go to the brakes

Neil let me check on the decals for the C36. I've been away.

Guido.

Guido- I was thinking about brake ducts as well, but looking at where the existing belly pan goes, I can't seem to visualize (yet) how to make one without loosing vertical clearance or being in the way of the lower control arms. Thanks again for checking on the stickers/decals.

Anyone got some ideas on the brake duct?

Jim- we considered aluminum and the various grades of T6 sheet Al. Yes, Al would be lighter, but according to my application engineer stainlesss-steel 304 at 14-gauge is more durable, esp. as a skidplate; also ss 304 is easiely formed with the ducts (less welding & AL welding makes things expensive fast).

More to come.

off the topic:

Hay Neil,

I was wondering if there was any possible way that i would be able to put a complete plate all the way accross the bottom of my car,so everything is covered; i think I've seen it before on a 300ce.

Thank A lot.
Albert.

The plate you saw was on that red AMG converted 300CE with the 5.6 litre engine.

They had plates on it at the back and front.

I'm sure neil or someone else can dig up some pics for you. I would think its doable.

Alon
