COMPLETED C124WB PROJECT

A young forum memeber always finishes his posts with the following:

"if your car isnt shiny, you dont know what you are talking about, remember; paint shine = knowledge. In order to be taken seriously, you should spend all your money on paint, (and get a dyno reading).
Dont forget to polish it often"

He is much wiser then he knows as if you apply his words you can end up with a finished project that has been on a dyno, makes very reliable "Hammer" power and is a period correct replica with a great deal of value...

From the 1988 AMG catalog:

Very nice Ed.
I was wondering about your general opinions of the duraflex front bumper. Been thinking of getting one for my car. Does it look wavy at all?

The Duraflex is a very nice high quality product....
Not much extra work required to finish...no waves or holes...no skim coat required prior to paint !!!
It's not as flexible as they lead you to believe..I'd say semi rigid with a bit more flex then a hand laid part.

The AMG Gen I bumper did block my air intake plenum, so we fixed Corvette C6 brake cooling ducts to the underside of the Duraflex bumper...

The pic with my CLK63 Black Series and the C124WB is part of a shoot done by a U.K. magazine...
A feature article should be published in the late Spring 2013.
A U.S. collector magazine will be doing a later article.
It's as close as possible to the C124WB as you can get..
A great deal of research, most from outside of the USA was done to replicate the original build.
Oddly enough AMG North America never built a C124 widebody..
The original builds were very rare as most opted for the C126 widebody as there was not much cost difference and you got the V8 !

Ed - this sure came out awesome. Are you around over the holidays? It might be fun if I drove up from Balmer in my Ersatzhammer and we compared notes.

Also, who re-upholstered your seats and made the armrest for you? I have some Recaros for my car, but they need upholstered and I haven't come across anyone I'd trust to do it in Baltimore.

Mark

I should be around over the Holidays....
A local shop did the Recaro's.
I started with the vinyl seats which only have a single seam on the seat side bolster which makes the softer leather "pucker" slightly on the knife edge seam.
If you start with original leather seats it has the double seam which can be trimmed much tighter.
Would I use the shop again...not sure...

Conversely the body/painter I would use everyday if I could....better then most restorers I've known over the years.

The armrest is an old aftermarket Schatz unit that was for a W202.
A bit of modifcation and some VHB tape and it works.
I covered it with OEM MB Tex.

Also changed out the instrument cluster since the pix.
Did the black dial face with the correct pre merger AMG logo along with the 300KPH/180MPH speedo.

Spring time I'll do the water/meth injection and hotter Nology ignition coil.

How is your car running ?

Ed

My car is running frighteningly well. I love driving it, though it does make me drive like a lunatic sometimes. The acceleration is extreme, and it doesn't seem to ever stop! You should consider getting Russell to build you a Quaife rear end; it made a world of difference in my car. The car used to feel like it was twisting up off the road. With the LSD, it's a different feeling, much more stable. I don't really have a holiday schedule, it hasn't been given to me by the boss yet, but I will drop you a line if it looks like I have a half day to burn. Do you check your email often?

Haven't experienced any power delivery problems with the open 3.07 rear gear. Even on a drag strip in cold damp weather with Falken FK-452's it launched straight with even grip.
Roadwise, especially with the wide rims and Kumho Ecsta XS big rubber along with squaring off the front and rear strut/shock towers it's close to slot car. Extremely enjoyable to drive and nothing more I would change on the suspension.

I work out of the house so during the day Monday-Friday I check my emails frequently. Afte hours before I go to bed and on weekends early morning and late night.
