M117 vs M119 conrods.

Hi all,

I'm gathering info for an upcoming m119.960 v8 project, but need to confirm a few things.

I have found out that the early m119 has the same crankshaft as a 5.0 m117, but I cant find any info on the conrods.

Anyone know the part number of the m119.960 conrods?, or if they are the same as the m117?

Thanks guys.

There are some production breaks but one of the 117 conrods does update to the m119 part. 119 030 02 20.
If you are after swapping in a 5.6 crank then it does bolt in. Same bearings etc. There are some clearance issues but it can be machined.

Thanks for the info.

I'm thinking of swaping in a 5.6 crank and rods, to build a m119 5.6, but not sure what fits and what doesnt.

Seeing as the 117 conrod has been updated to the m119 part, perhaps the m119 piston will fit the 560 rod?

The piston might fit the rod, but I doubt it will work. There's a compression height difference of 4.9mm to make up.

Thanks Bob,

Do you mean the piston would be 4.9mm too high in the bore?

I have already looked at this. The piston is proud by quite a bit. And a shorter rod and the piston hits the crank. To do this properly you just need to get new pistons and rods and have the crank machined.
It is not just rod length but also the Pin location in the piston. You might be able to have pistons made that work with the 5.6 rods and crank. But I think that they are going to be pretty short and slap is going to be a problem.
Ask Jono about this. I think he has all the specs for a 6.0 conversion which is just a bored over motor with the 5.6 crank.

5.0 and 5.6 M117 conrods are the same length. But piston pin height differs. You may be able to keep the M119 conrods with a 5.6 crankshaft but you would have to fit the 5.6 pistons. I believe bore is the same so it may work.

Thanks,

If a shorter rod makes the piston hit the crank I have no option but to machine the crank.

I did have an idea about using the pistons and rods from the later m119, which has 149mm rods vs 154mm in the early m119. That should get the piston to around the correct height in the bore, but then the piston would still hit the crank.

If I do start to machine the crank, I will take the engine to 6.0 with new rods and piston, no reason not to then.

There are some development smashes but one of the 117 conrods does upgrade to the m119 aspect. 119 030 02 20.
If you are after changing in a 5.6 turn then it does secure in. Same bearings etc. There are some approval problems but it can be produced.
