M110, has anyone had their flywheel lightened? - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

Hi all, it's me again!!

I was thinking of having my flywheel lightened while I'm fitting an uprated clutch.
I just wondered if anyone else had had their flywheel lightened, if you have, how have you found it?

EDIT: From what I understand, the standard flywheel is about 18lbs, and I'm planning of taking down to about 14lbs.

Lower mass = faster acceleration/deceleration, less momentum at idle and for starting/clutch engagement

More mass = slower acceleration/deceleration, more momentum at idle and for starting/clutch engagement.

Also, a thinner and lighter flywheel wont dissipate heat as readily and will run much hotter. Coupled with more clutch slip during takeoff you could see greatly reduced clutch life.

However, im not sure 4 pounds is going to make a huge difference, but it will help acceleration.

That's my thoughts, I know the principle of it all, I had a Porsche 944 turbo track car, and I fitted a "race" flywheel, which made the car barely drivable on the track.
I then switched back to the original flywheel, but had a few pounds machined off, it was perfect.

I just wondered if anyone had actually done it to a M110.

mercedes did it on the factory rally cars originally. there is a heavy duty clutch as an option from mercedes. i'm lightening mine considerably on my latest engine build, but the whole rotating assembly is going to be considerably lighter too.
