Have you ever beaten an Acura type-S?

I know 500E can eat them alive, but can 400E beat those Acura CL type-S?

One guy who works in the same building with me has a brand new type-S, drives like maniac, I had two close encounters with this guy, but never raced him.

I know type-S can run 0-60 in under 7 seconds, that's no faster than my 400E, I have 215 tires on my 400E, it no longer spins rear tires under hard acceleration.

I am just no confident with my 1:2.24 differetial, I am afraid I could only beat him at highway speed, has anybody ever tried to race a type-S?

I wouldn't do it... not at American speeds anyway. You would chew him up at 100+... but I think he would get bragging rights on the way there....

This would be a very close race. Road and track has the S doing a 1/4 in 15 sec flat. While I have done a 14.8 1/4. These two cars are so close in performance that it would all come down to who had the better launch, who ever can drive their car the best will win the race. I would not bet anything on the race but do it for fun, and I would suguest going to the track because it is safe and you will get all of your agression out there. Before you race take out your resistor and see how you do. For sure you will kill him on the highway.

A good friend of mine has a TL Type-S. This summer we lined the C36 up against it. The MB has only 8 more HP and weighs about the same. The TL has an extra tranny cog.

I walked away. Repeated roll-ons showed the C36 much quicker then the Type-S.

The Acura has REALLY tall gearing, but lots of power. Same for a W124 E420! Probably an even match, save for the E-Class weight problem. It's a little heavier (not much) but that might be all the Acura needs.

Interesting match-up...

It's all about power to weight, with a consideration of gearing thrown in and aerodynamics when the speed's get high.

Okay, 6 vs 8 - I suggest for a demo put an E420 against a C36 or even Neil's bespoke 300TE with the AMG motor.

Yup. A six banger C36 can pull a stock-geared W124 E420. Number of pots means nothing. The C36 is lighter, steeper geared, and only a few hp shy of the E420.

Ok, I managed to put all the spec I got about those 2 cars:

Acura CL type-S
1st 2.563, 2nd 1.551, 3rd 1.021, 4th 0.653, 5th 0.470
Final 4.428
232 ft.lb/3500-5500 rpm, 260 hp @ 6100 rpm
weight 3510 lb, pwr/weight=0.0732 hp/lb
Tire 215/45R17

92 MB 400E
1st is 3.87, 2nd is 2.25, 3rd is 1.44, 4th is direct 1.
Final: 2.24
295ft.lb/3900 rpm, 268 hp @ 5700rpm
Weight 3660 lb, pwr/weigh=0.0732 hp/lb
My Tire 215/60R15 (Replaced stock 195/65R15)

They are really close, the power/weight ratio is exactly the same, the Acura's 5 speed auto has a much lower gear, but consider MB has 1/4 more torque, that may not be a problem. In fact, MB can reach 80km/hr (the end of the legal street drag race) with just 1st gear, Acura probably needs 2nd gear to reach that, And 260 hp for a FWD, I think it's pretty much near its traction limit, while a good launch is relatively easy to achieve with a 400E.

I am really tempted, imagine how that guy's face looks like if beaten by a 11 year old.

and the C36 has a smaller frontal area and probably a lower drag coefficient than the W124 E420 - overall generating less aero drag.

Your 300E will do 0-60 in aprox. 8 sec.

carman850-
I am very curious as to where you got your specs from. I have the E420/400E specs, here is the link. http://web.tampabay.rr.com/actionfit/pictures/
I dont know where you got your C36 info, but can you please tell/show us.
If you look at the 2 different road tests you will see dramaticly different results in the tests. For comparison lets take the car that tested better in the acclerations departemnet. The 95 E420 it did 0-60 in 7.1 sec and the 1/4 in 15.3 Well I have stated earlier that I did a 14.8 1/4 (and yes it was cool out 57 deg). My car weighs in on the upper side of 4000 lbs. So that totally kills my power to weight ratio, where as the 92s were lighter but lacked a few hps, but they still prefom about the same in the real world, I have seen Gtech results of 6.4 -6.5 sec for 0-60 for a 92. I think the reason why the C36 beats a E420 is because it has a better power to wheight ratio and has better more agresive grearing. Where the E420 is ment to cruze the C36 is made to preform.
bobbyv-
I have constanly seen co of drag # for the 124 as a .29 which is remarkable for such a boxy car.

Just for a note, in the real world I have ran a 14.8 1/4 and blackmercedes has run a very low 14 in the 1/4 with his old C36.

Just my 3 or 4 cents

Subman,

If you read my post carefully, you will see that the data I posted was for Acura CL type-S vs. 92 MB 400E

I got the information from Acura's homepage.
