R16 Resistor

Can someone tell me the part number on the R16 resistor for the 16V? and where it is located?

Thanks,
Giancarlo

The R-16 resistor for US 2.3-16 cars is in the wiring harness on top if the inlet manifold. You should be able to feel a lump in the harness at about the #3 inlet riser. Remove the tape and you should find a small rectangle connector that can be unplugged. Just unplug it and take a drive. You will never replace it after feeling the difference.

Jim,

I found a resistor somewhat like you said. It had black tape wrapped around the lower part of the wire and some other black plastic molds underneath the resistor. The part number is 000 540 19 81 104 00 34365 0. Is this the correct one? I pulled it, and I really didn't notice a difference. Im using 91 octane cause thats all I can find around here. What do u think?

Thanks,
Giancarlo

Does a 1981 380SL have this R16 resistor? It's CIS and a california model.

Remember, this car makes the majority of its power in the high revs, and as i understand it alot of the r16's affect is felt between 5.5k and the redline. I took mine out, noticed what i considered to be a slight difference, and put it back in.

If the picture at the bottom of your message is any indication, you are also running sport cams. I haven't the faintest clue as to how this would affect the power gain of the r-16, but I think it would have to have some!

Check the sl section with the question abou the connector...but I don't think it does.

The advance in timing mostly affects the upper revs. I noticed the most impact between 5000-6500 where it did not begin to "struggle"

ECM Learning?

The default ignition programming is obviously set with the R16 installed. The ECM will have to "learn" a bit after the R16 is removed - I don't know how long it will take for the program to adjust to the removal of the resistor - perhaps a member tech can comment?

Anyway - my 0-60 times did not change with or without the resistor, even after a full tank of gas without the R16. I timed two runs without and then replaced and did two runs with. A possible mistake, though, is that I did not "reset" the ECM to the factory program before timing with the R16 back in. A quick removal of the battery terminal should "reboot" teh ecm and reinstall the factory settings.

I'll run some more 0-60 and 1/4 mile times later to verify.

Howdy,

Is the 'brain' on the 2.3-16v such that it is capable of re-adjusting itself? I confess ECM's are not my forte, but I thought that the system wasn't that advanced in 1986.

(new brain, still doesn't re-adjust well...)

Hey Jim,

Maybe you are right about the resistor only affecting the upper RPM range. I try not to rev my engine that high though, maybe that's why I didn't feel it. I don't really know if it's worth it to take it out then, because how often in normal driving do you get into the 5000+ range? I only think I would take it out if I was going to go racing.

Hey manata,

My mechanic did the sport cams for me. They are not manufactured from a company like GTC that Bekkers sells. His name is Zim, Topline Auto in Burlingame, CA.

Let me know if u need any more info.

Later,
Giancarlo

Same with my 119 5.0L V8 in my 1989 560SEC. I took out the R16 resister and put it back in. It actually hurt my throttle response slightly.
