In my 75, 280SL has a detachable bell housing which usually means the tranny was used by more than one car manufacturer who supplied their own. Anyone know if this is true and where I could find a list?? Getrag # is G76/27-5. Thanks

If they did exist they are on very rare/ exotic cars. If you are thinking of ZF thats for sure. Think Lamborghini. These box's are made by MB. They are split like that so they can mate to different engines. You can mate that bell housing to other MB transmissions. Is yours worn out? Maybe a rebuild is an option. Santa rosa Hydramatic is familiar with those.

Here we go. The G76/27/5 is different from the GL76/27/5.
the key is as follows for the Getrag 717.4xx. all five speed MB Getrag units have 717.4xx as a MB part numbers. Possibly modern ones have a new designation. MB made units are the lower numbers 717.117 for example.
here is the code
G = getriebe / transmission
76 is the gear spacing
27 is the input torque
5 is for 5 forward gears.
The early G76/27/5 is made by M.B. 717.1xx to unknown. Check EPC.
The later GL76/27/5 is Getrag and is not compatible with the M110 AFIK. 1 piece unit. The internals are way different as well.

There is some info on rebuilding those older boxes in the W123 Hanes manual. It is 4 speed specific but they are similar I believe.

The G76/27, along with the G76/18, the 716.0xx, and the 716.1xx are all transmissions made either for or by MB. I am unaware of those gearboxes being used by any other manufacturer. The separate clutch housings facilitated the use of the same gearboxes with a number of different engines, and in different chassis installations. Those gearboxes were used in chassis 107,108,109,111, 114, 115, 116, 123, & 126, and with engines M 115, 180, 114, 130, 110, 116, and OM 615, 616, and 617.

bellhousings. I was hoping for another source for mine.

What is wrong with the one you have. Are you looking for an upgrade box or a repair of yours. If you end up letting go of yours let me know. I would love to fix it.

5th gear howls and finding parts. As stated above, the 123 manual has a good section on the 5-spd. I have the 2 piece, cast iron box (717.000) as opposed to the later (717.400) one piece aluminum and if internal parts are available I can't find them. Was able to replace the front and rear main bearings and seals using the 123 part #'s and the shifter bushings but that was all.

Have you tried bringing it in to a transmission specialist? I have no affiliation but Steve at Santa Rosa told me that he has gone through many of the three piece 5 speed mercedes boxes. He did some work on my GL275. The Hardest things to procure would be syncros and gears. Bearings can be obtained through bearing manufacturers. Bushings, and shims may be available through Mercedes.
Have you checked what is available through the dealer?
Checking the EPC list, you can go through and see if any of the parts from the four speed iron box transmission correlate with your box. I believe they will be interchangeable. Used is the only option if the parts are NLA. Unfortunately the majority of the 5 speed transmissions from MB will not fit the M110. The two types that do are very rare worldwide.

Sourcing powertrain parts from other companies or joint ventures with competing makes is common but some makes have their own designs / assembly factories. Automakers make very little of a car, most parts are outsourced. Even if a automaker assembles the transmission, other companies make the parts.

I suspect MB had assistance in designing power train components but they are unlikely to be used in other makes.

New process ( later called New Venture ) makes 4 wd transfer cases, standard transmissions for GM / Chrysler.

There is a recent front drive automatic transmission shared by Volvo / VW / Audi / Ford

GM / Saganaw power steering pumps on plies of 80 and up imports.
