Another Question For Mb Doc

MB Doc, thanks for your previous answer regarding the differences between the early Euro and US 300E's. Your answers are always concise and invaluable. But I ( and I'm sure other proud 124 owners) need your expertise again. I have an '87 300E. I want to make it as close to the Euro version as possible. I have removed the R16 resistor. I am assuming that this will bring it to the same level as the Euro version with the octane selector. Am I correct in that assumption? You also mentioned that the fuel mixture was slightly richer in the Euro version. Would this be analogous to enriching the fuel mixture as mentioned in benzboy 1's thread (the black box under the air filter?) Did the Euro version have catalytic converters, or did the Euro version have higher flowing cats? Then there is the cam question: I was considering getting performance cams from Schrick of Germany or Bekkers. I realize I am going to be losing some more low end torque ( I've already lost some by taking out the R16 resistor). Are there any specific performance cams that you can recommend?I realize there are only so many things you can do with the 300E. I am not looking to try to turn it into something for which it was not designed. But any little bit helps. One thing I'm grateful for: at least the Euro and US versions are very similar, and a US to Euro version seems "do-able," unlike the Euro and US 560's!! Thanks again for your help.

Most of the timing difference is thru the "MAP" that is designed into the EZL(ignition module). However removing the resistor will add 1-1.5HP at the rear wheels.
If you do go with a replacement cam remember that unless you do something with the exhaust system then it won't help much at all.
The EURO versions all had catalytic converters starting when the W124 chassis 300E was released in 1985.
The fuel mixture also was richer due to "programming" differences in the CIS-E fuel computer. AT WOT (wide open throttle) there isn't any real computer control for fuel mixture.
