Keep at it. These things can get to be tedious as you find all the things that are not quite as simple as you would have hoped. By the way there are ezls that are cheaper than others. The s420 or 400se or something like that is or at least used to be around 550.00 new. Where the S500 or most of the others are around 2800.00.

I figured there would be some unforeseen obsticles, but over all it is going well.

I got a good deal on the EZL thankfully. The 90-92 500SL EZLs are rare and expensive since it is the only one for an M119 with CIS-E injection. The other EZLs for LH injected M119s are relatively cheap.

Test Fit

I decided to test fit the engine in the car today. The engine does fit! Although it is tight. The exhaust manifolds are nearly touching the body of the car in a few places, so I will probably have to reshape those areas a bit.

Also, the M117 clutch fan will bolt right on to the water pump pully of the M119. The fan still fits the 560 fan shroud, but does sit a little further back. We'll see if it can still cool well.

The wiring is nearly complete!

I have a few more things to wire up. Just two plugs for the transmission and soldering some pins on for the X26 connector. It was quite tedious, but I'm happy will the results so far. I'm going to leave the harness unwrapped until I confirm that everything is working as it should.

I can't seem to get my pictures to upload, no matter what I try or from which computer I try, so I have links to them instead.

Have you considered the 722.6 transmission with the M119. It is a quantum bit more complex but that 5th gear overdrive and lock up converter make a huge difference. You will need to get a 2.65 diff to do this or have your EGC transmission controller reprogrammed. I'm not sure if that can be done or not. I did this with my M120 560SL by fitting the SL600 donner cars diff into the 560SL.

I had considered the 722.6 transmission, but I figured that I could always do that later. I'm sure that I could put the 2.65 differential into my car.

I personally don't mind the 722.3 transmission. It's simple and the 500SL transmission fits directly into the 560. Basically, I'm just trying to make it as simple as possible for myself while retaining all of the functions of the M119, such as, the cam advancement and knock sensors.

That sounds like a good plan. I your case you can always do the trans later. I got a significant increase in gas mileage going from the M117/722.3 to the M120/722.6. I believe most of that was due to the transmission having a lockup converter and overdrive the rest of it was due to the newer technology engine. I went from 16 MPG to about 21 MPG.

Update!

It has been too long since I had last posted. So, basically I'm nearly to the point of dropping the motor and transmission into the chassis for the final time. I've been having a heck of a time trying to get enough time to work on this project.

I'm currently covering the secondary firewall in new insulation and tweaking it just a bit more to get a better fit. I'm also repainting the areas on the chassis where we have had to make a little extra breathing room for the engine and of course repairing some surface rust around the battery area at the same time.

A few more details, I had to use a crankshaft position sensor for a 300SE/SEL for it to reach the EZL. The reason I didn't use the 560/420 sensor was because it has a special bracket that was far too difficult to remove without ruining the sensor and would have prevented a good fit and finish.

I have also finished re-sealing the engine and I have swapped on the 560 transmission output flange onto the 500SL transmission.

Badging?

I was going to de-badge the car when was finished with this project, but then I started thinking. It might be neat if I was able to get a badge that read "500SEL-32", similar to the early M104 powered 300E & 300CE that were badged 300E-24 & 300CE-24.

What are your thoughts on this? And how might I go about making one of these badges?

Its a cool idea, but 99.9% aren't going to get it. Still I think I like it better than de-badging.

Well I opted too up badge.

One day I stopped by an MB independent shop and was accused of rebadging a 380SL until I popped the hood.

Then all went quiet.

That is a beautiful R107 Roncallo. How does it drive with 400HP? Also, which transmission do you have in that car?

A bit of an update, the engine and transmission are mated together and in the car. No oil leaks... So far. All of the electronics seem to be working fine. I even got it to run for a bit, but it was not as smooth as I had hoped.

After some poking around it would appear that I have 2 injectors not spraying any fuel and I also had a spark plug wire that was falling apart...

I think that with 2 good injectors and new plug wires, it will run smoothly.

I also had to make my own fuel lines. The ones that were on my 560 wouldn't fit and they we're old and cracking anyway.

I used 5/16 Gates fuel injection hose and some clamps that won't cut into the hose. I had to scrounge around the junkyard to find some hose barbs that would fit under the air filter housing, but now I've got a whole collection of different fuel hose barbs.

I have the engine starting & running properly now. I had to reset the adjustment on the AFM/fuel distributor, as it seems the car it came out of had issues and the previous owner/mechanic had adjusted it to maximum rich. It was spraying a huge amount of fuel out of the injectors before the engine even turned over.

Now I'm just waiting on a custom power steering pressure line to be finished and I'm buttoning up a few other things with the cooling system and exhaust.

Also, I need to decide on how I want to mount the ignition coils... I'll probably just bolt them to the fender behind the ABS pump.
