Lifting a S124
Picture is just for a reference.. I've decided I would like to build my wagon into a cross country toy for some light off roading, camping, maybe a little hill climbing kinda thing etc... So basically I want to run taller springs and heavy duty shocks. Has anyone done anything like this before? Those old volvos fit Jeep Cherokee springs with no modification, that's the kind of hassle free mod I'm looking for. Anyone have any ideas before I begin my research adventure at the bone yard? |

A 124 wagon should already have load leveling suspension in the rear. I run mine a little high in the rear by adjusting the valve's linkage. These have softer springs than non load leveling cars, if you wanted to go a step further you could put regular springs in the back.
You didn't mention if the wagon is a 4-matic or not. The 4-m front spring is its own special thing. The only option there is to use the large 4 tit spring pad. On non 4-m you may be able to use a taller and or stiffer spring. I don't know off my head of any that interchange but the oe springs can be ordered in different firmness. There is also 'heavy duty' front shocks available. In the rear the load leveling prevents the use of the 'hd' shocks.

Look at my posts in this thread but ignore the original poster because we won't listen to someone who has done this kind of thing before and intends to do non class legal mods.
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/performance-paddock/342744-w123-racing-setup-serious-questions-within.html You can get around the 4 matic special front spring issue. Have a look at a later Honda and I think later MB 4 matic. These use a forked lower mount to get over the drive axle and a strut / spring combo. You could even get a "coil over eliminator " from an oval track race car supply house that should work for your app. |
