It's pretty clever stuff for the '70s huh? Never knew the old yank cars could be 'advanced' - ahead of their time even. (That'll teach me to make assumptions).
Still, can't help thinking they couldn't've (?) chosen a less appropriate car to equip with front wheel drive! How wide are the wheels, and what's the car like after 25 years? (Don't see many of these in England!) Russ

Back to the stall speed thing...
The stall speed test procedure that most manufacturers publish basically says: - Engine at operating temp, all accessories off - Place shifter in "D" - Hold foot brake and hand brake, essentially stop the car from budging. - Floor accelerator (gently) - Wait for engine speed to stabilize and record RPM Most cars are around 2000-2500 RPM... but every brand is different. The whole test only takes a few seconds... too high or too low a speed indicates a torque converter problem or a fluid pump problem. -Joe |

Outcomes???
W124 87 diesel stall speed is about 1700 rpm
Last time I was at the drags with my dads car (above), I was spooling the turbo and getting the stall speed up and it ruined my reaction time, but my quarter mile time was 18.1 seconds with 1.5 second reaction time in a DIESEL. My grandfathers Passat VR6 does 0-60 at sea level in 9 seconds. The diesel above always beats 323i, and z3s because they have small engines, and I think that most of themdont know how to shift at all. Well post your drag time... Austin |

how do you change (know how to change gears in automatic..) all you do is put it in 2nd and back to drive (124w 86 300e) so you start out in first and basiclly floor it the whole way right? let up alittle b/f it red lines and punch it again correct/

Don't bother letting up or you'll lose many tenths of seconds. It does a very quick change when it hits the red.. you'll notice you catch up on manual trans cars at that point.
For a diesel though, maybe you want it to change up earlier to keep on the torque. - If you have 'Economy' mode on the box, use this, and it'll change from 2-3 and 3-4 exactly as you shift the stick from those positions (provided revs are above about 3000)

diesel shifting
On the diesel, I always shift it manually. See this particular car has a different turbo than most cars I hear. This one puts out more volume and pressure. I have great power from 2000-4400 rpms. I think that if I had the turbo prespooled before I got to the starting line, I think that I could get my reaction time down to .7 or .6, and then the quartermile would be around 17.6 seconds...not bad for a diesel.
I am going to take my W123 diesel out here pretty soon, haha. With ac on and without it on. Did you beat the jetta? Austin |

with a 0-60 in 13-14 secs I really don't have much of a hope But it sure would be fun! I also want to dyno the diesel just cuz'... maybe if I have a friend who works in a tuning shop or something.

Yeah I want to do that to my 300CD turbo too. I dont think my 0-60 is as fast as yours because my engine is old 465k miles.
We should got head to head...lol. If it sounds like a gas, its just a loud diesel K? Im going to put in a 500 Euro in my sedan...haha. Austin |

on the 300e 's the lows gear in automatic is "2" , but there is a trick to get into 1rst. when your @ a dead stop. you put it in 2nd and then back to drive and you will be starting in first gear.

Don't know a way that wouldn't be quite permanent (like vacuum adjustment) to give E and S modes..
