The 500SE in Euro trim was good for about 220HP and 296 ft/lbs of torque. The 500E is a 32 valve motor of about 320HP and 350 ft/lbs torque. (And it makes more HP and torque all across the power band.) Your SE officially will do 0-60 in a tad under 8 seconds where the 500E was under 6 seconds, depending on which magazine tested it. Your car has a top speed of 140 MPH, while the 500E is governed at 155 MPH. (But probably capable of quite a bit more.)

The 500E has a bunch of very trick suspension bits and wider wheels. It should be a much better handler than the SE.

Surprisingly, the cars are about the same weight, but that has more to do with emissions and safety stuff required for the US market. Your SE will be 10 inches longer and 2 inches wider than the E. The SE was introduced in '79 whereas the 500E was only available in '92 and '93. Pretty hard to find a 500E today for less than $20,000, while your car in perfect condition might fetch close to $10,000. There are lot of them around for $4,000-$8,000. Your car became the 560SEL (Long wheel base.) in the US in 1986, but it was basically the same body style from '79 to '92. MB sold a lot more of the SEL's in the US than the SE's over the years.

The 500E will walk away from the SE under virtually any circumstance. The SE was not intended to be a sports sedan, but rather a luxury conveyance with good high-speed skills ( I bet, if in good shape, it'll cruise at 130+ MPH all day). The 500E, by comparison, idles at that speed. As to horsepower/torque specs, 500Es were very conservatively rated- I've run 5.1 seconds 0-60 repeatedly, with the only mod being bigger tires (and it pulled 6,300 RPM in 4th gear, WAY past 155 MPH)

Both nice cars, just different
