If you get one, be sure to order the "keyless go" option, it's incredible, and I believe adds only $500 to the cost. You should get a test drive of one with Distronic cruise control to see if you like it or not. Incredible car, really. Take a test drive.
One thing I have heard is that next year, the "Keyless Go" will be integrated into the key itself, so it won't require carrying the extra card (MB warns you to always carry the key even if you are using Keyless Go, in case of a Keyless Go failure. We haven't had a problem with Keyless Go yet).
There are lots of neat colors available, haven't seen one in a "different" color yet. I'd get creative and have something unique made up, rather than the usual white, silver, black, etc etc, zzzzzzzzz.

I have a 2003 sl500 launch edition and i love it. It is probably one of the nicest covertibles out there. THe keyless go is deffinitley a plus. I still havent figured out all of the different buttons and things. But overall i would give the ride a 90 out of a 100.

Looks wise, I think the car is killer!
It definitely is up there with the Ferrari, Aston, etc. looks wise!

The SL55 brings its performance up there too!

I'd take the SL55 over a Ferrari 355/360

My dad has one on order, but is going to try for a 55 instead.

His problem is he doesn't know what he wants, Black or Silver... Check my thread in open discussion and post your answers that that in there.

...what's there not to like?

It's:
> new
> modern
> aesthetically pleasing
> a convertable
> relatively inexpensive
> readily available if you have the $
> an MB (w/ the associated MB driving experience)

...enjoyed seeing three 2003 SL500's at the Starbuck's this past weekend in Campbell, CA (all at 9am in the morning)

I have heard that when you really get on the gas and really push the car to its limits, it tends to get a little loose and not such a nice car.
