16v suspension swap

I need to replace my driverside rear selfleveling shock(?). Ithink I want to convert to regular shocks w/H&R drop springs, and Bilsteins or KYB shocks. Anyone done it? Have any suggestions? How do I get rid of the suspension pump and equipment?

Hey standard,

I replaced my sls system for a conventional set up and am very glad that I did. I went with Bilstein HD shocks and hopefully this summer will get some Eibach or H&R springs. The handling is much improved and perfectly comfortable around town. You will need to get a block off plate from Bekkers for the front of the engine where the sls connects.

Later,
Giancarlo

Does anyone know the part # and how much it costs? Do you feel I will need a valve cover gasket?

One thing to remember is that when you purchase your springs and rear shocks, make SURE you're buying 8V parts. 16V springs WILL NOT work with the SLS system as the springs can't support the weight.
Contact Bekkers for info on their plate...

You dont need to spend the money for the bekkers block off plate. There is a factory one available for about $15. Tell your parts man to look up a block off plate for a 560sel W126 as I dont have the part number handy. I think there is also a gasket you need, cant remember at the moment though. It may not be as pretty as the bekkers plate but it sure works.

Isnt the 16 valve rear coil heavier than a stock 190 coil? Shouldnt you get a spring specifically for the 16 valve, the car is heavier that a base 190.

Can anyone do me a favor? If anyone has uninstalled lowering srprings for their 190 16 valve or regular 190, can you measure its length from end to end and post it here. Make the post in inches. I just bought a set of the Spax springs from RPI-equiped and am curious if the length is the same for all 190 lowering springs. I need the front length only. Thanks, Joe

The 16v has self leveling suspension so the coils are actually smaller/weaker because the hydraulic shock supports some of the weight. I would use springs from a 2.6 for the 16v if you are changing from the self leveling to regular.
