Attn: Guido (and other E500 experts)

Hey Guido,

I'm bringing my car in tomorrow morning for its 60,000 mile service and some miscellaneous issues (Mercedes of South Bay). It's a '94 E500, black pearl. It'd be great if you could work on it personally, since you own one yourself and know so much about the car already. Aside from the scheduled maintenance, there are a few problem areas.

1) The A/C takes awhile to blow cool air, and has a mildewy odor. Recharge? Overhaul?

2) The rear suspension clunks over speed bumps and dips. Rear shocks? Nitrogen cells?

3) The engine hesitates on cold starts, and idles rough occasionally. Carbon buildup? Motor mounts? Throttle actuator? Performance chip?

4) Electric sunshade retracts fully, but makes a nasty clicking noise if the button is held down, as if it is trying to retract further.

The only mods I have right now are K&N filters, Neil's chip, Jim F's piggyback harness, and Water Wetter. Any help you can offer, either on this forum or in the shop, is greatly appreciated. The car is Starmarked, so hopefully some or all of these things will be covered. Thanks!

-Daesun

Hi Daesun-

you have a pretty good idea on the causes as listed

add to (possible cause(s)) #3: caps, rotors, plugs, main engine wiring harness, loose ignition wire(s)/ poor connection ...(probably slim chance it's the computer or clogged fuel filter/fuel injector)

possible #4: probably w/b sourced to a rear sunshade retracting hardware piece(s)/ stop

w/ the 60k- its probably won't hurt to also reqest for the trans, rear end, and coolant fluids changed

hope this helps, and let us know how everything turns out..is your car Starmark? if so, the a/c work and rear suspension work will most likely be covered 100%

I'm curious about the sunshade clicking. My car does that as well and I assumed it was normal considering the sunshade works well.

Do others have this problem as well? Daesun, let me know if you find a simple fix for this, I'll probably have to get mine checked out too if it's not normal.

Placo1, my 500E RSS(rear sun screen) clicks as well. I always assumed that this was normal???

BTW, until I pushed the rss all the way down with the motor engaged while it was clicking, the rear head rests would not drop.

Is the clicking normal Guido?

Ross,

My rear headrests go down only when the sunshade is completely down, this is normal. However I don't have to hold the rss down when I'm disengaging the headrests?

So what is considered normal?

Mine clicks as well if you hold the button down too long. Do most of you use yours? I leave mine up 100% of the time in both our MBs.

Randy,

Mine stays down majority of the time, I only use it when I'm further inland due to the strong sun and heat. I'm going to be tinting my windows eventually and I'm sure I'll hardly use it after that.

Does your Sunshade click as well if the button is held too long?

I don't think the clicking is normal, as mine only started doing it recently. When I first acquired the car, the motor would stop when the sunshade was fully retracted. Guido mentioned this morning that he'd seen the same problem on other cars, so it's probably a pretty common issue.

How's the rest of your car doing, did the tune go well?

Hi Placo and all- here's my experience ('94 E500 @39.3k):

>...no 'clicking' noise(s) at the completion of the rear sunshade down/up operation- - also, >the operation is smooth and even both ways

>my understanding is that the rear sunshade must be in the complete down/rest kosher position for the rear headrest vaccuum actuators to be activated (via remote switch on dash)

[the rear sunshade (resting postion@down) click may be sourced to a worn or broken hardware piece: plastic gear or plastic stop]

>rear sunshade is resting-fully down when the E500 sits in the garage...on the road its up protecting 100% of the time...I've observed many a rear seat material trashed from heat and sun exposure

hope this helps
