300E Mossellman Supercharger

Hi guys:

Well it finally hit -- I want to go faster. Before I can afford a 500E proper or a C43, C36 or E55, I want install the supercharger on my 1987 300E 12V. I've just restored this car so it wouldn't make sense to sell it for 5 to 7 years and I may as well have fun with it in the mean time.

Doing some research I found that Mossellman does indeed make a bolt on super charger kit for the 12V M103 Inline6 that comes with my car. It offers an increase of 95 hp from 188 to 292 hp and a 60% increase in torque from 188 ft/lbs to 353 ft/lbs. While I want to install this unit -- the lowest price on it I found was in MA at RPM Motor Sport for $5,000.00 plus shipping and handeling.

Does any one know where to get this supercharger for less? And has anyone done this conversion yet?

I propose to install the rotors and calipers from a 400E (Could someone tell me from what year, and, if possible, what the part numbers are?); a 500E front sway bar and a Sportline rear sway bar, each with new bushings; and, of course, 16"x 7.5" 5 Hole OE wheels.

This set up would produce a horsepower to weight ration of 11.7 compared to the C43's or 11.4 and should yeild a 0 to 60 time of about 5.9 seconds. With no discounts, doing the work myself I estimate 7 or 8 grand. Does this sound right?

Any opinions, help or directions on accomplishing this conversion for the least amount of money doing the work myself (a reasonably competent guy -- but not an auto pro).
Thanks
Marc

Have you thought of the supercharger from an SLK? I believe guido has one for sale check the parts forum.

With some modification you should be able to get it to work well for you.

I am not sure, but guido is the man to talk to, as he was going to use it on his 300e before he got the 500e.

I too would be interested. It's so tempting to do this, as it sounds like it wouldn't be too complicated... but money is always a factor for me.

C43 compared to souped up 300E

Well I drove a 1999 Blk on Blk C43 today that the MB dealer would let me have for $36,000.00 minus the $8,000.00 trade in on my Restored 87300E. I don't know. The C43 felt great; very fast; very firm; but, it felt alot smaller than my 300E. The C43 felt almost like a toy (a kid's car) compared to the 300E. I'm back to thinking that I'll just bite the bullet and install the $5K Mosselman super charger, the $1K 400E brake caliper & rotor upgrade and the $200 500E sway bars to my old 300E. I've spent so much on this car in one year (including custom stereo) that I don't think $8,000.00 is worth it. I'd let it go for $16,000.00 but who would want to spend that on a 15 year old non-collectible car -- however good its condition?
Any thoughts on how to get a Mosselman supercharger for under 5 grand?

restored 87300E Obsidian Black; Palomino interior (16" 5-Holes; K&N; Bilstein H.D.; removed ignition resistor [does make a noticealbe diff.] and new wires, ignition coil, cap rotor, etc.)

P.S. Has anyone put an M.S.D. on a Benz (I have one) does it make a difference? or is it useless?

Mossellman Group Purchase

This idea is very intriguing. Why not find who the official importer of their product is and offer to make a group purchase from them?
I'm sure that there are more than a few of us who would like to "wake up" their 12v 124 cars.

Best Regards,

Richard

Check out the classified section of Benzsport (http://www.benzsport.com) for the Mosselman Turbo. I think someone was also organizing a group purchase.

Have you considered selling your 300E and upgrading to a 400E/E420 at 13-17K?

I think you'll have the same if not better performance.

Check it out here:

Upgrade to C43 AMG

HI

Thanks for all your responses. It would be great to have the money, the know how and the expertise to so seriously transform a 300E!

However, after some thought and driving the 1999 Black on Black C43 AMG again, I decided to buy it. They upped the trade in value of my 87300E to $9k and got me better financing interest rates from MB. It seemed to make more sense to me to buy this faster, rarer (and possibly cheaper) factory hot rod that, will appreciate in value over time rather than depreciate and require more and more expensive repairs like my 300E.

I guess that at about 180,000 to 200,000 miles (no one knows for sure how many) I have to give up on the idea of completely and permanently restoring and upgrading my '87 300E. As sweet as that car is (and I really liked it) I believe that I'll love my C43 AMG even more.

Any opions, knowledge or links to info about the C43 AMG would be greatly appreciated.

Good job! You will love the power & torque of your C43, much better than a forced-induction 300E.
If you really want forced-induction, I think you can fit a Kleeman supercharger in there as well . . .

Sure it's a little smaller, but not too bad.

Enjoy,

I thought Mosselmann only offered a Twin-Turbo kit for the 300E?

KNanthrup 06-22-2002 01:41 AM

nope, they have the bi-turbo and the supercharger, both cost mucho tho

speedracer888 07-07-2002 04:15 AM

congrats on the purchase! I personally love my W124 to trade it in for anything in the world. Even when I do want another car in the near future, I would still keep my car and store it somewhere. I simply don't like the fact that someone else is driving my car after I customized it so much. Even worse if the new owner is an idiot and rices it out really bad or crashes it...

The C43 has a lot more potential and it's lighter too. Add a filter and take out the resonators. It's pretty much done up for you!

i'm interested in twin 10lb. nitrous tanks... with a compu-flow interface integrated into an alpine Navigation/DVD system...woo hoo...

SUPERCHARGED 300E

1 Attachment(s)
If I were you I would call up Paxton or Vortech and find someone near you who does custom work on foriegn cars. You can have a American made supercharger installed for a lot less. I have looked into adding a supercharger to a 300E and it is not that hard. Easily tied into the factory serpentine belt system.
I estimated the cost to be under $3500 on the high side.(Supercharger, Intercooler, Exhaust & Modifications.)

I have never installed a supercharger on a 300E but have installed turbos. I have installed Supers on Fords, VWs, BMWs, Toyotas and many other cars. Adding the supercharger to the 300E would be just as easy as installing one on a 190E. (a lot of room!)

The picture below is a customers car that I installed a Paxton on.
Total cost was $2600. Car is a 1991 318i 4 cylinder. Power output is 215HP @ 9psi., not bad for a 4 cyl.

mushedroom 07-18-2002 02:50 AM

so i want to do that then....get a supercharger...
how do i go about pricing it?
i'm in hollywood
