UPDATE:

Ok, the engine is completely apart now, and it wasn't the ring...check out the pic of the piston. Can anyone tell me what happened? I'm still a bit of a novice when it comes to engines...

Another pic while the piston was still in the block.

That looks bad... are the cylinder walls allright?

Sorry to hear that.. it's such a good looking 16 Valve..

maybe something got into the combustion chamber? or did it overheat??

16V

Your engine over heated and blew the headgasket and put water in the the cylinder hole, then it came back up and screwed up the piston. Did this happen at high revs?

I'd have to agree with Austin. this seems to be the most likely cause.

I talked to my dad about it.

He said that the pits on the top are from running too lean. He said, "was he running nitrous?"

Your engine got way too hot.

Can you tell me where the spark plug is in relation to where the piston is screwed up?

Austin

16v plugs are centered on the pistn. ie dead center

Unhappy

OK, here's my diagnosis. I have to check the gasket again, but it didn't look blown. There wasn't any coolant in the oil, and when this happened, the temperature was a bit higher than normal (about 95 C), but nowhere near overheating. So, I don't believe this is the case.
The O2 sensor light came on a little while ago, and I was going to replace it soon. So, I guess the sensor gave the computer a false signal causing a lean mixture, which in turn cause the extreme heat and that melted the piston. That also caused the higher coolant temperature.

Omegabenz,
I'm not running any NOS and the sparkplug is exactly in the middle. The pits on top aren't actually pits. They're bits of melted piston stuck to the top.

The cylinder wall actually looks pretty good considering what happened. It's just coated with aluminium at that spot, but I'm going to have the block bored to clean everything up.

Obviously, this ruined the rod, too. So, does anyone have any idea on where I can get one connecting rod?

I'm also going to check for leaks on the #1 intake runner, as that could have caused a lean condition on the cylinder. The other pistons are in fine shape and you can still see the cross hatch marks on all of the cylinder walls.

Thanks for all of your help, but the questions still remain:

1. Where can I find the dimensions I need to get custom pistons like compression height, deck height, diameter, etc? Does anyone have these?

2. What about cams? I've heard that stock cams are the best for most turbo applications because turbo cams just increase efficiency. Does anyone have the specs for the stock cams (lift, duration)?

3. Is there anything special I should know about building this engine?

Later,

I wouldn't think that the rod is bad if only the piston is burnt, have a machine shop check it first. If you are going to do a turbo setup now is the time to replace the pistons. Call JE and see if they have specs for the pistons. The bore is going to have to be measured to see how much of an over bore is needed to clean it up then the pistons can be ordered. The machine shop is going to want to have the pistons in hand to do the final finish on the cylinder walls. The stock cams will be best for the turbo application.

Your engine was run too lean, probably due to that O2 sensor you were talking about. It was probably giving false readings and telling the injection system to lean it out.

JE pistons would be able to help you like said earlier.

on that 2.3-16, the rods should be the same as a 2.3, the pistons are just dished differently to allow for the valves/higher compression, but you should check into it/measure them.

I would fully rebuild that block, tear it down, and build it back up. You might have to bore it over a little. If your motor is aluminum alloy like a lot of the V8s, you better take it to someone that knows exactly what they are doing because you have to do it right. If its cast iron, which I doubt, thats easy.

Maybe check with metric motors about your motor.

Dont bore it too much over because of the water passages. You can probably bore it up to 2.5 because the 2.5-16 was the 2.3 bored out really big, then it had a short stroke to rev fast.

If you want to turbo your car, use your factory cams. Plus it would be too hard to find turbo cams for the 2.3-16 because there are probably none.

Contact me when you are going to turbo your car,

Austin

Um, has anyone here heard of www.bekkers.com ? They carry the 2.6l kit for the 16v if my memory is correct they have turbo applicattion pistons, and high compression pistons. They also carry turbo cams and other degree cams. A bunch of other stuff too, check them out!

Some of the stuff may not be on the website so either call or order the catalog!

I hope I have been helpfull.

Concentric,
Yes, I know Bekkers, but I simply don't have the resources to spring for a stroker kit, although that would definately be awesome!

Everyone,
I'm desperately seeking the stock compression height of US and Euro 16V pistons. As it turns out, my engine could possibly be an early euro 16V engine but I need these values to confirm it...check this thread out...

Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Later,
