Michael et. al.

My car only has 35k miles on it is it a good idea to replace at least the 2 hoses you recommend? It looks like the upper and lower radiator hoses have been replaced out. I guess my question is, is it the age of the car or miles on it that dictate change?

Will you be at the NE GTG? If so I look forward to a brain dump and some maintenance tips.

Thanks!

Thumbs up

Mark,

I'll certainly be at the N.E. getogether, since I'm the one that got the thing rolling (with some nagging from Jim N., of course )

I would change the 2 hoses if I were you - they are 10+ yrs. old, and if one fails the odds of you being able to replace it on the road are nil.

Hi Mike- did you replace the plastic overflow bottle too?

All the pics I've seen of this item on our cars seem to indicate that it has a 'yellow/ brownish' tint to it- - vs. the white color of the windshield washer fluid resovoir...

If you did replace the coolant plastic overflow bottle can you share with us what color it is 'new'...Lilly White like the windshield washer fluid resovoir?

tks-fad

Mike -

To save me the trouble and others seeking to do the same can you provide the MB part numbers for the two hoses that run from the back of the engine to the heater unit?

Thanks

I replaced both the overflow tank (hidden inside the fender) and the expansion tank, which is next to the washer bottle.

As to the color, see the picture below.

To do it again, I'd not bother with the overflow tank, but would do the expansion tank (replacing the coolant level sensor too, which is attached to the expansion tank)

As to the part numbers, since these hoses may very well be production date-specific, I'll defer on posting potentially erroneous P/Ns - sorry

Michael,

Thank you. I am trying to locate the drain plugs and I have some difficulties with it. I believe they should be accessed from the bottom. Do you remember what size socket did you use to unscrew them? I have 1998 SL500 (4 valve) so the blocks should be the same.

Regards,

Marek

Well, actually, there are 2 different types of M119 block drains, although as I recall I have the later style. Look aft of the mtor mounts; the drains go straight up into the block, and are internally wrenching allen-type bolts of 5 or 6mm

The late model M119's used a 6mm "hex/allen" banjo bolt, the early models just used a 6mm "hex/allen" bolt and "crush" washers. Replace the washers, and use a "wobble" extension to reach.

Make sure your 6mm hex bit is sharp; clean out the bolt seat; and make sure the bit is seated in firmly before attempting to remove.

Just thought I would add two cents, I replaced all the hoses, wp, etc. but did not replace the powersteering pump hoses. 18 mos. later we went back in to replace those.

MUUUCCHH Thanks to Donnie for all his guidance. Hope to be down your way in the next couple of months.

PS. to Michael and others thanks for the input on tires. The 245's are increadible. Not too harsh, just Perfect. This 3800 lb. baby is far more comfortable at the limits with the wider 245's than the oem 225's.

Thanks Again

Dwight
