500E Headlight Question

Ok, stupid question, but here goes!

I looked in the archivies and am aware of the diference in the high beam / fog light. My question is: Is it just a matter of wiring and changing the front lense? Or is the whole headlight assembly diferent? Can I change the front lenses on my euro lights to 500E euro lenses?

My reason for asking is: I am thinking of upgrading to HID, I curently have euro headlights, and the HID kit I am looking into would cause me to loose my high beams. My thoughts were to make the fog light location my highbeams and relocate the fogs to the front bumper similar to a 500E look. It seems from the archives my "lamp out" light will also iluminate, is this a definate?

Am I way off the mark? Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Not sure about the euros, but in the USA/DOT variety, the headlight assy of the 500E is different than those of other W124 due primarily to there NOT being an amber lens in the fog light of the headlight assy. Some members have broken the Amber lens out of the headlight assy and achieved a look similiar to the 500E.
Externally, I'm not sure that the outter lens is different on the 500E VS. All other W124's. If by lens you mean the inner reflector, I'm not sure you can buy just the reflector, you may however be able to get the entire assy's from a salvage yard.

The 500e/e500 lights will fit any W124 model....just change the lense...and remove the yellow/gold plastic from the foglights....and you will need to do some work on the electrical portion(but not anything extreme).

hope this helps,
Albert S.

Dean,

As Alber avec S. said, you'll have to do a little re-wiring, but it's not a big deal.

Albert...uh...sans S.,

FYI, as you are well aware, the secondary lights in the 500E headlight assembly come on only with high beams and there are foglamps integrated into the airdam of the 500E. On a regular 124, the secondary lights serve as foglights since there aren't any below the bumper.

As a result the beam pattern on the 500E euro lenses are actually a driving light pattern which keeps the light more focused and aims it farther down the road as opposed to the wide, diffuse pattern of a foglamp.

hope this...sheds some light on the issue.

incidentally, on the 500E lights, the plastic inside the housing is actually painted with quicksilver (or something similar) while plastic in the regular 124 light assemblies are just plain grey

Thanks guys!

Wanted to know incase I have to make my current fog light my high beams and relocate my fogs to under the bumper.

My current Euro's have a clear fog light, so I'm ok there, assuming I would have to re adjust them to make them "high beams".

Preformance products has HID lighting for W124's on sale for $495, but you loose your high beam. Incase anyone else is interested.

Thanks again! Greatly appreciated!
