Getrag rebuild?

Hi,
Should I have my 16V 5-Speed Getrag tranny rebuilt to handle the power from my turbo build up? It functions perfectly with no grinding during shifts or anything like that. What can be done to strengthen the tranny? I know these transmissions are tough, but how long would they be able to handle 400+ HP? Is there anything I should measure to see if I should rebuild it or not?

Also, what kind of oil should I use for the tranny and the rear diff? Are there any types/brands that are highly recommended for this tranny? Anything to stay away from?

Thanks!

400+ HP???? It's hard to believe your little 4 banger could blow the doors off a Viper...

Rebuilding the trans would help if you had a problem!

USE Redline MTL in the trans & 80W-140 synethetic rear axle grease.

Thumbs up

Thanks MBDoc!
Where could I find the capacities for the tranny and the diff? Anything I should know about changing the fluids?

Oh, could I use the 75W90 instead of the 80W140 as the heavier weight isn't as efficient, or are there reasons why I should go with the heavier one?

Thanks!

Later,

Well, I don't have the engine put together yet, but Benzmac just got done turbocharging his stock 16V. He's running 15 lbs of boost on the 9.7:1 compression ratio, which results in about 420 HP. Mine has a 8.5:1 compression ratio and 20 to 25 lbs of boost, which should yield 450 or so HP!!

Hey Dan,

Glad to see that you are moving along with your project. When you find out the measurements for the tranny and diff fluids please post them, because I also want to switch my 16V over to Redline fluids. Also, did you go with Bekkers 2.6 stroker motor with low compression, or are you keeping it at 2.3L?

Thanks,
Giancarlo

Giancarlo,

I didn't go with the stroker kit, as it was a bit too expensive for my budget. But, I bored the block to 2.4L and bought custom 8.5:1 JE Pistons.
I'll let you know about the fluids once I put them in.

Actually, I was!! Big intercoolers and water injection works wonders on eliminating detonation. And I o-ringed the block!

Well I want to know as soon as your fire that engine up if you can get away without detonation. If you can, I am going to up the boost on my project. Could do with a bit more upper end power.

Will do. Are you going to run a custom ECU? Precise fuel metering and ignition control is also vital to running detonation free...I'm installing the DTAfast E48 ECU (http://www.dtafast.co.uk).
