Need Help from E500 Owners
Greetings from the great white North. Winter tires are lined up in the garage ready to go on in a week or two. Temps have been around 0 degrees Celsius overnight and its a toss up if it will rain or snow....
Time to think about next spring! I need to hear from other E500 owners that have installed a chip that has REMOVED the top-speed limiter???? My SuperChip doesn't do it and I've tried Neil's chips that have worked in 500E models but nada in mine!! I'm willing to spend money based on your sworn testimony....

What is it that you're trying to determine? If there's a chip out there that'll de-limit an E500? I'm working on a more "aggressive" factory chip setup; I'll find out if possible what's different with your setup

Why don't you get the Renntech chip?

Extreme: I've called RENNTech before about their chip for the E500 and the fellow said it will NOT remove the rev or speed limiter! Now I've heard from Scott that his RENNTech-chipped 500E does go past the speed limiter...what gives?
Michael: I want to be able to reach 170mph so I need to deactivate the 155mph limiter and the 6000rpm limiter 'cause I'll need nearly 6500rpm for the task.

Dean,
Want to try out my 1992 factory chip? It's sitting here on a shelf...

Thanks for the offer Michael...I'm just not sure if thats workable.
As you know, there were changes to the output of the 94 E500 which may make the earlier chips incompatible. When I tried Neil's chip for his 500E, my car wouldn't even start! Thats why I started this thread asking if anyone with an E500 (1994) has found a chip that removes the rev and speed limiters. On the other hand, for the cost of postage it wouldn't hurt to find out if your chip could do the job. I'll check with my technician to see if he has any advice and call you off-line. Cheers,

How about a chip from a 94' E500 Limited? I'll have to get Bri to open his up on the highway to see if it has a speed limiter programmed in it. I'm sure if he did have no limiter, he'd let you copy the chip's program, well, I shouldn't speak for him but I can't see why not...since its almost winter bedtime for the car.

Dean,
I have the PAD chip and I know it removes the rev-limiter. I don't know about the speed limiter. I just had my tranny rebuilt and the car wouldn't shift out of first when the pedal was on the floor. I wound it past 7K several times and had to lift off. I'm not sure where the limiter kicks in but it must be less than 7K. I assume its the chip b/c I had hit the limiter a while back with the stock chip. Randy |

I know for a fact that Neils chip that we put on my friends 93' 500E disconected the limiter! I've opend 161mph without a problem in his 500E....ask Neil abt it....I think he still sells them..

Wondering.....
500E/ E500 Top Speed Claims of over 156mph perhaps maybe due to speedo inaccuracy sourced to plus 1, plus 2, plus 3 upsized wheel/tire- - ???? I've read good info posted here in the archives that the 500e/e500 top speed is moreso gear limited (and HP limited)... vs. rev limited on the top end... -fad |

Hi All: Thanks for the responses...
-fad: I've taken my E500 to a GPS-measured 157mph several times before the speed and/or rev limiter kicks in at 6000rpm. If I can get 500rpm more, the car should be able to hit 170mph!! Randy and others: re the PAD chip...has anyone installed on an E500? I think there may be some programming differences from the 500E as the engine output was downrated due to emissions changes. Jim: I've read that the E500 Limited still had the "limiter". I'd be interested in having that confirmed by anyone with that model. Has anyone heard of a fellow named Oscar Velez who apparently programs chips?

I was always wondering myself...I never read anything about it so will report back on that. The owner is willing and able to find it out himself also. Perfect weather to find out...50 degrees and dry.
As for 170 mph...are you switching gears in the rear? God bless ya'....that's fast, man. I've seen Oscar's small ad's in the STAR... he's in Puerto Rico...do they have roads long enough to provide the testing of his stuff? I thought his stuff was copied from RennTech mercandise? Anybody know? |

Jim,
I've heard the same thing about Senor Velez, but can't confirm. According to the early 500E factory stuff I've read, at least the early cars are supposed to top out gear-limited at something like 165, but drag limited at 174 with slightly taller (numerically lower) diff gearing. And I know these motors are happy to wind past 6k; there's a member among us that had his CAN computer fiddled with some years ago by factory guys, and his car tachs all the way to 6,700 RPM as I understand it Don't know if he's ever tested the speed limiter, though
