Smile M119 Oil Change Help

Hey everyone, I'm planning on doing my first ever oil change on the 500E and I want to make sure I'm doing this properly. Here is what I have so far:

1. Drive car to warm up engine and heat up oil.
2. Insert the vacuum line into the dipstick opening and drain the oil (using a Topsider)
3. Remove old oil filter and drop in new filter and O-Ring. (Do I need to add any oil to this?
4. Add 8.5 Quarts of Synthetic
5. Here is where I need the help. As I understand on the M119 there is a proper way of starting the car when doing an oil change. Can someone give me a step by step on how to do this to prevent that slapping/knocking sound and possible engine damage.

Thanks in advance for the help, really looking forward to doing this myself, far more rewarding.

When extracting the oil, I always suck any lingering oil out of the filter housing. When firing it up after adding the new oil, I key it the first time, but try to stop short of the engine catching...then, on the 2nd try, I let it fire. Seems to minimize the clatter.

Next time you won't have to be so concerned, as synthetic has a higher propensity to hang around on the cylinder walls, so just crank it & let it go....likely what I do is overkill.

Enjoy the ride

Michael,

Thank you for the reply. I'm glad you mentioned draining the oil filter housing, I'll definitely be sure to do this.

I remember hearing something somewhere, I don't know if it was on this forum about disconnecting something when you first start an M119 after an oil change. Whatever it is that's disconnected prevents the engine from turning over. For the life of me I can't remember what it is.

Have you heard of this?

I've never had a problem with this on a 119, it's more common on the 116 V8's, not so much on the 117's and don't recall "The Death Rattle" on a 119. On any of these i would recommend a new chain tensioner if you had the timing chain rattling on an oil change start-up.

Hmm....maybe it was a 117 and I'm mistaken. I'll be sure to note if the chain makes any knocking noise on startup, I guess I'm being a little to anal.

By the way I just bought a Topsider from Northern Tool, was a bit expensive at $99.00 but I figure it should pay for itself after a couple of oil changes. I'll let everyone know how it works after Thanksgiving.

Thanks again for the help and input.

VSVO,

Thats exactly what I had seen in the past, thanks for posting that. I wonder if my motor falls into the category of "Old M119 Motor" Probably not based on what others have said.

My car has 60K miles on it now and I'm thinking that it will need a timing chain soon. I'm going to try and convince my warranty company of this and get it taken care of. The reason I say this is the last time I was at the Indy the car made a slight chain slapping sound for a couple of seconds before quieting down.

I'm more concerned about the plastic rails than I am the chain considering this motor runs soo hot and really keeps the heat inside the engine bay.

Thanks again for the input.

Well I just succesfully finished my first oil change ever.

To anyone considering changing their own oil and using a Topsider type device I highly recommend it. I personally recently purchased a Mityvac from Northern Tool for $99.00. It is capable of holding the 8.5 quarts my car uses and it's effortless. The pump is a full size canister and only requires 5 to 10 strokes to get the oil started. Every few minutes it needs a couple of additional strokes to keep the oil flowing quickly. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a high quality tool. It can also be used to bleed brakes and transmissions.

Michael,

Thanks for the tip on the oil filter housing, it definitely needed it!

Well, my car didn't have the dreaded racka racka on start up so all is well internally.

Thanks again for the help everyone.

Is there something different with the Mityvac you bought vs a Big Boy Topsider? I bought a Topsider from Northern Tool last year for about $45.00. Also see it at Boaters World for about the same. It also holds 8.5 quarts but I must say I do have to watch it more and pump it up several times during the oil change. Probably takes me about 25 minutes to extract all of the oil.

Gary,

To be honest I never saw the big boy topsider advertised at Northern Tool. As far as extraction goes, the Mityvac sounds similar to yours regarding time to remove the oil, approximately 15 - 20 minutes.

The Mityvac consists of a clear thick graduated cylinder with a thick black top and bottom. The ends are gasket sealed and screwed in with 5 screws each. Also attached to the base is a full size hand pump similar to a bike pump. The pump is connected into a float switch to prevent an overflow. The top portion also has a pour spout. They also sell an electric pump version as well but the cost was double.

I looked at several versions before purchasing but never came accross yours. Do you have a digital camera to take a pic or two?

no digital cam but go on Boaters World web site and the Big Boy Topsider is on there with a picture. It's a blue, round gas can shape with pump handle on top. When you go on Boater's World, you will see Bib Boy oil pump, click on this and it will have a picture. Your unit actually sounds like it is built a little better than this one.

The Big Boy looks pretty nice, could have saved a few bucks buying that.

The Mityvac can be found on Northern Tools website if anyone is interested, unfortunately the pic doesn't show details and really doesn't do it justice.
