Scca 190e 2.3-16
MB DOC-
I'm building out a new SCCA car from an 87 16 valve. I know I must keep the 15x7 wheels according to the IT rules, but what size/brand tires do you run? I was thinking 225/50-15's in the Kumho's or Yokohama's. Should I go wider?? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks- Chuck #28

Have tried all of the brands! IF you want a lot of track time for the money try the Kumhos. IF you want to go about 1 second a lap faster then go with Hoosiers 225/45 x 15.
What gear ratio do you plan on running?

Still getting feedback from others who have run these. I'm also selling my AS car that I competed with this year, so I'm not throwing a lot of money at it just yet. Any feedback is very appreciated. As an MB junkie, I'm just psyched about having the 3 pointed star in my view on the track for 2003!!!
Thanks- Chuck

I've been running a 16v in ITE since 1994, and have also built a couple of ITS 2.6 190s.
Here's what I've found. The fastest tire is without a doubt the hoosier. They also live the shortes lives, and once they go away- they are GONE! They are not very forgiving if you overcook them. The next fastest tire I've used (and currently still use) is the Toyo proxes. True, they don't have as much stick as the hoosiers do, but they last sooo much longer. ....and I care more about being able to afford to play, than I do about the 7 dollar first place plaque. The toyos take a lap or two to get up to tem , while the hossiers are usually "ready " right away. I get my toyos in "full tread" two sets at a time. I measure the circumference when mounted and keep on set of full tread for rains. I have the other four "shaved" to 4/32ths for dries. The beauty of having the shaved is that my tire guuru guy has different "templates he can use to shave more camber etc into the tire if needed. Yokohama A032's I use for "lap/track" days with my 500e streetcar because I also will get lazy and leave them on while I drive on the street. The goodyears are expensive and I think they are worthless. They cord too easily, and braking performance with them is not too good in my experiences. Kumho's , I haven't tried them yet, and have heard mixed comments about them. The ITA front drive honda guys here love them, but the AS sedan guys aren't too excited about them. Hope this helps. |
