If the sportlines are original...

change them unless, money is a problem. Otherwise, Bilstein Sports all the way.

I would also recommend the bilstein sports for the reason that the sportline shocks were not designed for the extra drop in ride height you will experience from the eibachs, and therefore they will be operating as if you were driving with a full load aroud town, and therefore will have crazy extra stiffness (not the good kind) and will bounce around a whole bunch.

im running on pads 2 in the rear and 1 in front with sportlines now. i plan to put 2 in front and 3 in the rear with eibachs so ride height wont be very much different. (?)

what is about stiffness? are they just fine or too soft/stiff?

The pad don't really provide much compensation, just a few mm at best, since they were designed to compensate for the weight of optional accessories (sunroofs, a/c systems). Lowering with the Eibach will shorten the stroke distance of the Sportline shocks and wear them faster. As for stiffness, it's like asking if something is too spicy or not spicy enough. The Eibachs are stiffer than stock, but not as stiff as the H&R seems to be the concensus.

MTI, i meant if the sportline shocks have sufficient stiffnes to work with eibachs. I already tried eibachs with BIlstein HD and IMO the HDs are way too soft for eibachs

does anybody know the difference between Bilstein sport and bilstein sprint shocks?

I read somewhere that the Bilstein HD and sport have the same vavling, but different stroke lengths. The HD's were designed for increased load bearing, if you tow boats/trailers or decide to have a full on dance club amp and light show in the trunk.

Eh, according to Neil V's conversation with a Bilstein engineer, the Sport shocks were actually copied from the Mercedes OE Sportline dampers! They are VERY similar in stroke, valving, etc. I would expect little if any performance difference between MB Sportline and Bilstein Sport shocks/struts. Which to buy, IMO, depends on which you can get cheaper.

The Bilstein Comfort and the HD's are not designed for a lowered car. The Sport and Sportline dampers are, as well as the 500E front struts. Any of the ones designed for lowered cars should work OK with Eibach springs (or most any 124 lowering springs). I have never heard of Bilstein Sprint shocks, at least for the 124 chassis.

BTW, if you're going to be selling some good used Sportline shocks/struts, drop me an email... I might be interested!

thanks for your replies!

here in Russia bilstein sells several types of shocks for mercedes 124. these are- original, HD,sport and sprint.
also they sell BTS suspension kits that consist of 4 lowering progressive springs (made by eibach) and 4 shocks (made by bilstein). the shocks from this kit are called sprint (not sport) and are specially designed to work with lowering springs.

when i was replacing HDs with sportlines we looked at the shocks and found no differtence in their length and travel too!!!!

so what i want to figure out is bilstein sport that sold in US is identical to what they sell here under this name or these shocks are called sprint here. i have called bilstein dealers and they all told me that bilstein sports for w 124 are all painted black!!!!!! are they black in US too?? or yellow?

Drunchik,

It sounds like the Sport shocks you see are what we call HD, or something similar. Over here, HD's are black and Sports are yellow. Here's what Neil found:

> After reviewing technical documents from Bilstein on the Sport and Heavy
> Duty (HD) dampers/shocks, and talking at length with a Bilstein engineer
> in San Diego, here are the technical differences between "Sport" and "HD":
>
> valving: "Sport" 3% difference between "HD";
> compression length: "Sport" 10mm shorter than "HD";
> exteneded lenghth: "Sport" 30mm shorter than "HD".
>
> According to the engineer, "Sport" was modelled after MB's "SportLine"
> shocks (OEM is SACHS, I have a pair).

It sounds to me like you'd want the Sprint (yellow) shocks. Are you sure you have OE Mercedes Sportline shocks now? What are the part numbers?

GSXR, thanks for your reply. It clears up a lot, but still i have some questions and some things to say.

my sportlines are original MB. you are right the front shocks are labeled SACHS under the paint but the rears are bilstein, all 4 with original MB stickers.the shocks have 3 written on them with white paint. these were the shocks that i have been measuring against the HDs and found no difference, but possibly i was doing something wrong way.

here are the part numbers for bilstein shocks for 124 E320.

Sport front V36-0361 rear B36-1385

Sprint front V36-0365 rear B36-1470

So which ones that are called sport in US?

Ah! That explains a lot. In the USA,

front V36-0361 rear B36-1385 - these are HD's (black)

front V36-0365 rear B36-1470 - these are Sport (yellow)

The shocks need to be measured out of the car, btw, for comparison purposes. If your Mercedes shocks (out of the car) are the same as "Sport" Bilstiens, they are not Mercedes "Sportline". Can you find a Mercedes part number anywere, stamped on the shocks? It will be in the format 124-xxx-xx-xx. If you have standard MB shocks, the Bilstein Sprints or MB Sportlines will be much better with a lowered car!

i just checked the numbers of my HDs and they are exactly the same as on what bilstein HERE calls sportline. but from my dealer i ordered them as HDs.

my measurements were probably wrong as i am 100% sure my shocks are MB original sportline, they were ordered from a dealer that i buy from for very long time and the guy never screw anything up or delivered the wrong part.

thanks everyone for contribution, this thread helped alot to find the correct answers!!!!!!!!!!! it seems that buying a set of yellow bilstein sport is a waste of money as they are copied from the shocks i run now
