Take the door handles off the car so you can paint it good.
There is vynal prep chemical that you can put on it so it gets it ready to paint, then you take a pad and rough up the surface, then you paint it.

do a search on adam bourassa. drop him an e-mail. he had his grill powder coated, and may be able to shed some light.

The oem chrome ont he grill is very good if you ask me.

Since you have a spare frame, might as well go for it. you can always dechrome it if it is a problem and redo it.

Thumbs down

A guy down the street from me had a W140 with a black chromed grill, and as I recall he had it rechromed a couple times b/c it kept chipping off. Not sure of the process he did or anything, just thought I'd share.

don't parkerize/black chrome...

...as it will turn bronze/reddish/orange over time (due to sun fading).

take a look at the window trims on my car. those were black chrome originally from the factory, and now they are goldish.

A good "black chrome" refinish job won't turn into any other color or fade, loosing it's deep mirror finish.

I refinished a parkerized handgun with "black chrome" four years ago at a refinishing shop in Anaheim, CA and they guarantee the job for the lifetime of the pistol. Of course a handgun is not always exposed to UV rays, rain, etc. but it sure performs under critical conditions.

If I ever have a black W124 for sure I will "black chrome" the grill.
