Oil switch for C36

Hello all,

I have a couple of question about what oil to run in my 95 C36. I used to run mobil 1 10w30, but that turned out to be just too thin. I was using about 1 quart every 3000 miles. So my mechanic recommened that I switch to Castrol 20w50. He said that is what he uses in all is 100k plus cars, and noted that the M103 / M104 motors seemed run well (no oil loss) with it.

I have been running the Castrol for about 1 year now and the engine is in good shape, and not losing oil. But it seems to be a bit slower reving since the switch in oils.

Do you think that I could switch to 0w40 Mobil 1 pretty safely? I don't want to be in the situation of filling the crankcase between changes. Do you think moving to the thinner oil will bring back a little bit of the pep?

What are the ramifications of switching between synthetic and dino oil?

Thanks!

~dnm

I don't think the viscosity of the oil is affecting your ability to rev. They are multigrade oils, designed to operate satisfactorily in the given temperature range.

I myself am running 20W-50 oil on my C36 after having switched from Mobil-1 about a year ago. This is because I am in the tropics and have no problem with low temps. I noticed no change in the engine's willingness to spool up since the change, am I have never needed to add oil between changes.

Something else is making your 36 lose pep man. I noticed the motor is pretty sensitive to gas octane. What are you using in it?

I've run Mobil 10w30 and 20w50 (synthetics) in my 1995 C36 (about 100K) and the car seemed to "like" the 20w50 stuff better, even at the track. However, my car didn't use any oil and had been on synthetic in one form or another since about 50K miles. There is a 15w40 or 10w40 available from Valvoline that works great. That is what I'm using now. (standard issue synthetic at MB Autowerks). Same as what the dealers are using for all their synethic....

Hope this helps....Lee

When I first switched my 500E from dino oil to synthetic, I tried Mobil 1 0W40 and didn't like it - the idle oil pressure was down to around 1 BAR from 1.5, oil consumption was JUST noticeable, and the racka-racka noise at startup was noticeable. When I switched to Mobil 1 15W50, all those symptoms disappeared. I switched at around 100K miles. Currently at 116K.
