500E - removing rear deck speakers

I've searched the archives, but have not found the help I need.

I bought some Rainbow speakers from La Jolla audio to replace the front and rear deck speakers. I was able to replace the fronts without too much trouble. I'm having a bear of a time trying to figure out how to get at the rear speakers.

I first tried prying off the grills. Now that I'm halfway through, I wonder if this was a mistake and whether I was supposed to remove the entire structure - the hard plastic casing that houses the grill.

Does anyone know for sure how to get at the rear speakers? And if I've pried off part of the grill, whether I'll be able to get this back on? Seems like the little slots where the metal mesh grill attach are pretty small and that the grill tabs need to be just so to get them back in. Thanks in advance.

you need to remove the plastic casing, not just the grill. then you will have full access to the rear speakers.

Any suggestions on how best to remove the plastic casing? I've tried prying up from where the casing meets the rear deck carpeting, but this didn't appear to work.

Car Audio Section

Frank, I think someone on the Car Audio section of Mercedesshop should be able to answer this in a few moments. Be sure to mention you have the activ bass system on a w124.

What I did was to push on front part of the speaker grill housing, then lifting it once I had pushed it back just enough to clear the deck. Then I was able to reomve it. There are two tabs at the front that go under the deck in the front. There are other tabs as well on the sides and such. once you get it loose, you should have no problem removing the rest of the grill and housing.

you can resecure the grill to the housing by straightening the tabs and pushing them back through their holes, then bending them over on the inside of the housing to secure them back to the housings.

Not to make light of Ashman's good advice, another 500E owner who has done extensive 500E audio upgrades you may want to talk to is Michael Curcio aka "Michael" if you have any further questions.

Hope this helps....Lee

Thanks for the thoughts, Lee - I believe I detailed the grille's removal somewhere in the post "500E Stereo Upgrade". I'd rather refer you there than my memory, as I've sorta blocked out that whole time-consuming affair:p

It was worth it, though
