neil if you still frequent this thread, can you tell me, your car is a genuine 360te, correct? is it a genuine AMG 3.6 liter m104. you didn't put a front clip on or maybe drop the engine in after you bought the car. Because i am looking to put the m104 3.6l in my 300ce if i can. if it is the same block as the m103 which i hear it is then there should be no problem right. can anyone see a problem with what i have deduced here? does it sound pracitcal.

was the C36 E36 360TE AMG engine all the same. is there any difference over the years.

would the later model 5spd auto from the E36/C36 AMGs fit in the w124 tunnel? is the are the diff centers the same size, does all this sound extremely expensive(excluding parts) conversions wise. Sorry if these questions are stupid but there aren't many people to ask in Sydney, the dealers say. "I can't recommend that you do that." then all the performance shops say "just wack a big turbo on it." But i want naturally aspirtated power its better (IMHO). Besides turbos make the back of your car filthy.

Mike- unfortunately, my wagon is not an original AMG product.

I located a 1995 C36 engine, tranny, differential, computers and wiring harnesses.

Suspension is 500E front & rear springs, early 500E front struts, 6-cylinder Sportline swaybar, and 500E rear swaybar.

I also upgraded all brake-calipers to 500E.

Essentially, all years (1995-1997) C36's are the same physically. In the USA, the 1997 C36 came with an electronic 5-speed automatic (another computer & wiring harness to integrate) as well as Motoronic Electronics (type of Electronic Fuel Management).

The 1995 & 1996 C36 came with a re-inforced 4-speed automatic (no computers) and HFM (hot-film management).

With ME, HP was raised by about 10-12 HP.

Everything will fit physically (don't know about the electronic 5-speed). You will need custom A/C manifold & hoses, as well as a custom driveshaft.

Do a "hot-rod" forum search for "C36" & my username (KE6DCJ) and you'll see there's a lot to be done, esp. electronically (e.g., cruise control; ABS; etc.)

If you had a HFM M104 engine in the CE body, the C36 engine would be an EASY swap electronically.

I believe you have CIS so, so an early CIS M104 engine (e.g., early R129 300SL's) might be an easier swap electronically, although no where near the same power.

A C36 transplant into a non-HFM car will be expensive labor wise, IF you don't do the work yourself.

Good luck and if I'm ever in Australlia, we'll have to meet up.

:-) neil

neil thanks for you input. what do you think the chances are that the 5 spd would fit in the tunnel?

i had another thought about trying to get a 5spd manual tranny and hooking it all up. i believe with all that power standard you'd be pulling under 6.5 secs 0 - 60mph

which would be beautiful for me i'd love it.

was it difficult to get the custom drive shaft made up?
And the custom A/C manifolds?
Its just very difficult to get stuff done here, as i may have said before, no one plays with the mercedes here like they do there.

having to get custom piping would be the perfect excuse for getting braided hoses, and same with the radiator.

Did you have to worry about mounting position of radiator compacity? are you stil using the standard radiator? its just i only got mine replaced about 2000kms/1300miles ago.

was your car CIS(cheap injection system) or HFM (hardly f**kin mechanical) before you changed it.

With the C36 are there any easy to do(that isn't really a good question eh) conversions for more power. eg power chip/ extractors/ porting the head/ air filter
you know what i mean.

Try this link:

360TE AMG project completed (PICS!)

Using stock radiator but now with adjustable electric puller fan for more HP.

Any good driveshaft shop should be able to do it.

Any good hydraullic line shop should be able to help with A/C lines.

Car was CIS previously, so a bear to work one, esp. cruise-control.

Not many mods for C36 engine, except PowerChips.

neil,

I found that page but i wasn't sure if that was the right one. When i do decide to do this conversion would it be possible if i could get your notes on how you did this conversion. Even if you can scan them in and send them to me, just so i can get a basic idea of how you went about it, stuff will be very different, well at least it will all be opposite.

I just want to know how you did the wiring loom, how you did the drive shaft, did you have to cut and paste the body just general stuff like that.
