500E stops on a dime...

Just last week I put a set of crossed drilled rotors and original Mercedes Benz pads on my 92 500E. The 500E/E500 are not knowns to have the best brakes but after driving the car for a few days i'll tell you that the difference is very noticable. The good thing is I got the whole deal for $180.00 which included front rotors, front pads and all new sensors. I did the work myself and as soon as the rears need replacing I will put the same on the rears.

What barand of rotors

I've heard good things about Zimmerman cross-drilled rotors. What brand did you use?

As to braking ability, on the contrary-500Es have EXCELLENT brakes, if stoping distances are the only measure. However, they will fade after repeated abuse (read: track use) which has many owners looking to upgrade.

Nice V...I didn't know Zimmermann made crossed drilled rotors for the 500E. Are they coated against rust/corrossion and have you noticed any increased dust yet with the 'cheese grater' rotor?

FWIW...ANY brake set-up will fade with a heavy foot and an inexperienced driver...not that any of us are like that !!

Vcci:

Please go back and figure out whether they are Zimmermans or some other brand, and also tell us where we can get them for that price. Thanks.

p.s. Please also report back on increased brake dust, etc.

I'm surprised that you would find a noticeable difference going to drilled rotors, 'cause in effect you are reducing the total contact area of the rotor unless you've upgraded to larger brakes?

The best (and most cost-effective compared with aftermarket brake kits) real braking improvement you can get for your 92 500E is an upgrade to SL600 front brakes. You'll find several previous threads on this upgrade....good luck!

Dean- you're correct the SL600 brakes are a vast improvement for FADE resistance.

Remember- if you're existing calipers induce ABS, going to a bigger caliper or a different rotor does NOT shorten your braking distance. Going to wider and stickier tires is what shortens your braking distance- the tires do the work.

If new rotors & pads feel better, most likely because your old rotors were either too thin or did not have a high co-efficient of friction (perhaps contaminated, glazed, etc.), plus the combination of old/thin and contaminated pads.

In effect, with new rotors & pads, you've reduced the "compliance" in the system.
