Which vehicle accelerates faster a 2000 Mercedes-Benz E55 or a 2000 BMW M5. I am assuming that the M5 is faster because of its manual transmission and power advantage over the E55.

Well, power is nothing if can't fully optimize it. Y2K M5 is not as fast as most ppl would think, though it has 6-speed-tranny. E55 has Torque advantage over M5, and the acceleration for both car is about par.....

But, M5's appearance, both inside and out, sure is striking......

Happy Motoring....

Hard call...I've seen testing results where the two were about equal (within a tenth or two) and I've seen other testing results where the M5 just ran away. Guess only time will tell. Wonder what the performance difference would be after 100K miles and no (major) new parts allowed?

Somone out there must have a recent back issue... let's see, "Motor Car Road Driver and Track Trend" (senility IS setting in.) Brief story about an Autobahn run with an E55. The editor driver says the Bavarian M5 he came across did pull on the Benz slightly up to the 155mph speed limiters, but it was quite close.

If the comparison is anything like my recent test and purchase of an E430 over a 540i, whatever slight accel edge the Bavarian may have can easily be given up for the solidity and comfort of the Benz.

Just my opinion,

I absolutely agree! That was the final reason why I bought a C43 over a 540......

I think that the E55 and M5 might be equal in terms of acceleration, but the M5 will offer superior handling over the E55. I have not driven either car, but from driving both a 99' E320 and 98' BMW 740iL you can tell that the BMW has a much more refined suspension than the MB does.
