Question Make my 600sel go fast! It's too slow & heavy!

My 1992 600 SEL looks fast with 19" wheels and P Zeros, with AMG body kit, but the car is totally stock and original from air cleaner to exhaust. is there any way to make this car pick up and go? Any chips, pipes or go faster gear that realy makes a difference? Thanks, mike

the easiest way is just to race people starting at 100mph and going up That huge v12 should pull real nice at those speeds... If you don't mind spending some dough, im sure Donnie and Benzmac can hook you up with a kleemann kit that will develop some stoopid horsepower...

Maybe you could swap your rear end for a lower ratio. Some 400e/e420 owners have done this with great results. I'm sure your 600 has really tall gearing. You might also want to checkout places like Level 10 - they are an auto transmission specialty shop that sell kits to improve shifting performance and sell things like higher stall speed torque converters.

These just might be the most effective ($$$ vs performance gain).

Just curious, but I would think that a V12 would be plenty fast, no?

I've driven an S320 and was impressed by how that 6cyl engine moved such a big car. Maybe I'm just a power wuss!

Definitely change the gears. I think the gears on a S420 are way lower than yours. You would never know what hit you. Melting your tires would be too easy with S420 gears... I think Subman or somebody borrowed these gears for an E420. Are they 2.82's? on the S420. Anyone know the gears on S600?

Not Fast Enough??

IIRC, the 92 600's had the highest hp @ about 402 compared to later years where it was reduced slightly to around 380 or 390. The 0-60 were about 6.5 seconds (in a 5500 lb. car, no less!), bone stock. Unless you're from planet Krypton, those are pretty healthy numbers!

Probably your easiest and cheapest performance gains would come from a rear end swap, as suggested by earlier posts.

Thumbs up 600 SEL replys for go faster ideas!

Thanks guys for the rear end tip. i like that idea. it makes good sense. Don't get me wrong the benz pulls strong, but it is like leaving the red light on a bicycle in thenth gear. once it gets rolling it pulls strong. it's just the tall gearing from a stand still that is frustrating. i don't spend as much time in the 100-150 mph as i'dd like to. maybe i'll just use third gear a little more often around town. thanks again guys. i appreciate the tips! mike

Mmaser,

You sure you're using first gear to start?

You won't be unless you know how to !

Perhaps you might write to Carl at carl@bergwerks.com I bought a first gear start module from them for my 500E and what a piece of kit that is ! It certainly gets you away from the lights before the boys racers ! They might be able to point you in the right direction anyhow . . . !
