Technical Data Hard to Find
Does anyone know why it is so damn hard to get your hands on techincal data for merecedes engines. If there isn't a haynes manual, it is damn near impossible. If it isn't impossible and it isn't on ebay, it is goign to cost you $80. Why the hell is this?

What info are you looking for? The MB CD on the W201 chassis has almost all tech info & specs that "should" be needed.
For the newer cars the WIS system is the ONLY way to get info at all.

George,
your'e living in the USA or not? I don't understand your problem. Mercedes sells workshop manuals both paper or cd to the public. They are available in the USA and since two years even in Germany, where it has been "dealership only information" since ever. In case you are you willing to pay for information there shouldn't be a problem at all. So, what kind of information are you looking for? bis denn, Christian 1989 300TE |

I rebuild engines a lot and this is my first mercedes engine. I have never had so much trouble finding stuff like the crankshaft journal size, piston to cylinder wall clearances, timing information for the timing chain. Could anyone tell me at what crank degree the intake valve is supposed to open. That kind of stuff that I just can't get my hands on. I have the engine service manual but it doesn't have that stuff in it. I ordered a techical data manual from PartsShop but naturally, it was backordered and I have been waiting for a couple of months now. It cost me quite a bit of cash too. This is the kind of stuff I am talking about.

Maddog:
I feel your pain, working as a Tech for Lincoln/Merc I am used to having easy information at my fingertips... finding info for my 300E was a trial.. I bought the 124 disc set for like 150 bucks, it didnt work properly or cover anything I needed for the engine rebuild... I called MBUSA and the tech support agent said (2 years ago) "ooh yeah, we hope to have an update that fixes all that" What I found: Go to your public or college library-- Find the huge(multibrand) CHILTONS 198x-199x "ALL" IMPORT CAR repair manual They will have the measurements that you require. Wont be much else, but the hard technicial specs will be in them, then just zerox the spec page for 10cents at the library rather than forking out the 150 bucks for the service disks |
