April 5-6: Carolina Motorsports Park anyone?

In preparation for the One Lap of America, I'll be running my 500E at CMP with NASA on 4/5-6. Anybody interested in joining me? I'll be instructing, so any road course novices I'll be happy to ride with you (however, if you have ANY experience, then you're likely faster than me!).

Apparently it's 450ish miles from DC. As to my route, I kinda don't know yet since I've just arranged to run @ Memphis Motorsports Park www.memphismotorsports.com the day before (with a BMW club-ought to be interesting-a lone MBZ in a Sea of Beemers ) so will be running CT-TN on the 3rd. Both are on the Lap schedule for '03

As for Carolina: www.carolinamotorsportspark.com

WHY NOT.....

Sounds great and have driven there but can take it or leave it. The track is only a few years old and designed by a well known track designer, but the track is like it was designed by two different people.
The first half is good with nice sweepers, a few altitude changes and a nice 'back straight' with a slight kink in it, then comes the part like a strret course, many tight 90 degree turns that bikers like. We've used it for testing the TransAm car for the street races
and the NASCAR guys do their road race testing as it's only a little over an hour south of Charlotte in Kershaw, SC. It reminds me of the old airport courses used to run in the late 60s!
Michael, which NASA group organization will be running this or is it a test/tune day put on by CMP? Will be back at Roebling on 3/3-4and VIR on 4/28-29 so that day is open at the moment so if you need more instructors, I'm open and will be bringing the 190/5.6!

I'm not gonna do Memphis- too big a trip, and reportedly not a really difficult track to learn. So, the focus is on CMP; NASA VA is putting on this event. I run/instruct with NASA Northeast, so the VA folks were kind enough to allow me to run as an instructor - no better way to get a LOT of laps under your belt!

Tobias, what groups have you run with on CMP? Are you a NASA member? Let me know, and I'll find out what I can of their instructor openings

Red face Kershaw or bust!

Michael,
My first visit to CMP was to spectate a NASA event and get a perspective of the course. I later went for a test/tune day put on by CMP and ran all day. The track is such a 'thrill' I haven't been back since! Not knocking what Humphreys and Joe Hooker did to develop the motorsports facility as it's great to have one so near to Charlotte. The land needed much work to put a course on but Alan Wilson, the designer, could have done a better job. Most here in road racing all feel the same of the track layout, especially the last portion of 90 degree turns!
Since not a NASA member, I'll rescind my offer to instruct and leave more time to play. I've got my motor apart at the moment but hope to be together for Roebling (Savannah, GA) for a D/E
event on 3/3-4.

It's only $35 to join NASA; if you eet their criteria, and they have room, I'm sure they'd be happy to have you-I've not once been to a DE event where they had enough instructors to go around. I'd look into this-their website is www.nasaproracing.com and the VA chapter is http://www.nasaracing.net/

Good luck

Thumbs up Yes,.....any others?

Michael,
I do plan to be there although not sure if for both days at the moment. Write me offline with your plans and how many are traveling with you so we can make plans to meet up. Also what your travel schedule looks like....probably hectic!

Huh? You mean, I'm not the only one tracking a 500E? Jimbo has a racecar, BTW, so his Benz will never see a track (although he's a drag-race fan wish I had a 'rocco to beat up)) Please do tell!

Michael

I have a couple of benzes, my track car right now is a 190E 2.6 5-SPEED. It has a sportline package on it and some other mods that allow it to redline at 7K rpm. For the Summit Point event, I put on Toyo RA1 225 50 ZR 15 tires on some two piece aluminum wheels . This is a huge tire for a 190E, but it really sticks to the track !!!!!!! I had a great time outlapping a 190 2.3 16V car and a 560 SL !!!!!!! 87 vintage. I am a big fan of DTM & motorcycle racing ( the last Daytona 200 event was killer !!!!! ) not really a drag racing fan !!!!!!!! My 500E is my ongoing HOT ROD project right now. I would like to talk to someone who knows more about the DTM 190's

E DREAM

Wow...that event came up fast. I had gotten the info from Mark but spaced. Didn't hear any more on it from anyone...oh well.

I'm actually in the middle of doing new suspensions on both cars so I could of only watched...or flogged my wife's Volvo!!

Who else ran? Marky Mark? All Benzes? Sounds like you did alright , mang !

What do you want to know about the DTM 190s? (besides where to get one?!!)
