I share a similar opinion, given the build quality of my C55AMG, I appreciate the build quality of those watch firms alleged to be "manufacturs" (i.e. they make everything including the movement themselves), hence my Jaeger Le Coutre, Master Date (Silver Face, 37 mm); Zenith Grand Class Elite, Power Reserve (Blk Face, 43 mm); and Girard Peregaux F1 047 chrongraph, date, 40 mm (all aluminum case and apparently only 250 of these were made world wide). However, G.P. started with an ETA 2892A2 movement, added a Duboiz Deprez chrono module, changed to an in-house ceramic bearing rotor assembly that does not need to be lubricated, and tuned and assembled the rest by hand to make the F1. Best of all, the face of the F1 is carbon fiber with white numerals and red sub-dial hands that match the C55, AMG instrument cluster almost perfectly and more accurately than does the IWC "Ingenieur AMG" model. I do still think that JLC and Zenith built the movements for the Master Date and Grand Class from scratch. I can forward pictures to any one who can post them.

Regards,

Awesome collection of watches, Marc!

I'm absolutely thrilled by a new piece also...

This classic Vacheron has a very unique movement, the only manual winding one that was ever shared by both Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet...

The calibre 1003 starts as an ebauche, or basic movement, from Jaeger-LeCoultre then is decorated and tuned by Vacheron to Geneva Hallmark standards. It is known as calibre 2003 with Audemars Piguet and at 1.64mm it remains, after over fifty years in production, the thinnest manual movement made. The Vacheron model also has the distinction of being listed as one of the top 999 designs of the 20th century by an influential design catalog.

IMHO there is one other watch movement of more significance in that it was shared by all three great houses: Vacheron, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet...any guesses?

There's nothing on TV tonight (is there ever?) so lets talk watches

This is another recent aquisition...

While a very fine and classic design from Ebel, its the movement again that interests me most...

Beating inside is the Zenith-made El Primero movement, which is both historically and horologically significant. Along with Movado, Zenith developed in 1969 the first high-beat automatic chronograph movement (hence "el primero") which, at 36,000vph was able to time events down to 1/10 sec. It remains the only such movement to this day! The El Primero also found itself inside the legendary Rolex Daytona for over twenty years until very recently when Rolex finally made their own chronograph movement (less complex and cheaper to produce). Furthermore, the El Primero was the thinnest chronograph movement at 6.5mm until surpassed in 1987 by the equally legendary F. Piguet calibre 1185 at 5.5mm.

Hint, it was also sourced from Jaeger-LeCoultre

Well, I have never been to this part of the site before (probably has something to do with the fact that I can't hardly keep my MB running, much less performing with BMW's and Porsches, might have something to do with the nearly 5k curb weight), but its very nice. As far as watches, I always wore a cheap timex, until my father died and left me his two watches;
1. Rolex Day-Date Stainless Steel Superlative Chronometer (that watch is even hard to SET, but it always runs, you just have to shake it, and it keeps perfect time.)
2. Seiko 18K Gold Dress Watch (Gift to my father from my mother on wedding aniverrsairy)
My father had this idea that success meant Driving a MB, Wearing a Rolex, Having a Two Story house, and wearing Ralph Lauren Clothing. I try not to be so pretensious, but those were his opinions.
Thanks, Dave.

What happened to this thread? Did anyone get any nice watches for Christmas? I recently bought a Seiko Orange Monster diving watch with rubber band.

The thing is so ugly that it looks good... anyone know about these automatics? The metal bracelet is supposed to be extremely nice but I figured I'd want something lighter so I went with rubber...it is a big freakin' watch, hence the name Monster. plus it's nicer to swim with.

Supposed to be a pretty bulletproof movement. Good value for 150 bucks!

I have that exact watch but with the SS strap. I love it. I just convinced a friend of mine to get one for her bf who normally only wears Breitlings. She got him one for Christmas and he loves it.

I just recently bought another Seiko. Fantastic watch, I like it almost as much as the monster.

These are seriously high quality watches. I also own a TT Sub and a Seamaster and the Seiko's just feel more solid.

I remember seeing this thread years ago and still enjoy reading it to this day. Now I feel like joining in. Some fantastic watches here, and cars of course!

I too like the Seiko watch, what model? I like the bigger watches because my wrist is big enough that the smaller ones look "off" to me.

Jaz watch - Seiko movement my younger sister bought me for high school graduation, still runs great, thin classic look.

Maurice LeCroix and I just purchased this Swiss Army Divemaster 500M. This is also a larger faced watch, about 42mm across the face only. The Swiss Army watch is very heavy! I like that also.

Current cars are: 2001 S55, 2001 CLK55, 92 400E...love the w124's!

The model number is SKZ211KS. I'm wearing mine now and it's been on my wrist pretty much every day for about 45 days (which is good going considering I own 15 watches).

I'm beginning to really like the Seiko models. I used to like Invicta a lot because they made quality watches at a fairly low price. But neither of my invictas feel as nice as the Seiko's which feel more like a $2000 watch.

This GMT will probably be the next on my list.

1991 Mercedes 300e. Proven to 295k miles as of Feb 4th, 2007. No one believes that it is original paint, nor interior.

Currently I have an Armitron SS that looks like a million bucks. My very wealthy aunt asked me how I had the money already to purchase such a nice watch. I told her what it was and she was amazed.

This watch is what I am all about. simple, strong, black and white.

Decrepit old Heuer Professional Diver 1000 series, gold tone head that had a horrible gold jubilee bracelet when I bought it. I trashed the bracelet and put a padded leather strap on it and it looks great. Best $150 I've ever spent on a watch.
