Hee hee, its kinda funny having this discussion on a Mercedes forum as the same question could be asked about our cars too! How would you answer your own question if someone (I'm sure its happened) was to make the same argument against owning an M-B?

I haven't seen any knock-off Mercedes . . . A lot of wannabes from the land of the rising sun and Korea, but no blatant knock-offs.

Yeah, there was a time when if you saw a Lexus (Lexi?) from behind and a block away, you'd think it was M-B

I sent my omega into SGUS (Omega New Jersey) to have it completely overhauled, $900 later...Check out the photos. It took 14 weeks, instead of 8 weeks, but hey you cant rush quality right?!? 10 years of faithful service. I wish I never took it to some amateur in San Diego at year 3...but whatever, Omega took care of everything this time. It looks brand new - except I can see a few scratches that give it character from me =) It tested at 3.5 seconds/day, it was at like 25 seconds a day, so let's see. The bezel and sapphire account for almost half the cost at 222 and 177 USD, respectively.

Well, sure there are barely disguised attempts to copy MB styling, but nothing like real attempts to mislead someone with cars the way it is with luxury goods like watches, hand bags, etc.

Hi Austin: Considering the wear and tear on a watch that beats over 20,000 times per hour the cost for maintenance is still better than a car with the same "mileage" ;-)

Ever had a Speedmaster?

I have the same watch, and it was losing about 45 seconds / day.

It was purchased originally in 2003, so I guess it's time for a service.

I sent it in to the Omega service center in Los Angeles, and they quoted me $450.00 to completely overhaul the movement, and buff out scratches in the case and bracelet.

What is strange is the quote didn't mention the blue bezel insert, which is definitely scratched.

Is that a chronograph? $450 sounds pretty cheap for a chronograph. I think my Breitlings are typically $550-600 to have serviced. When you compare that to the regional cost of the watch, it's pretty huge. If you had to pay 15% of the (new) cost of your car for the regularly scheduled maintenance, that would be a deal killer. On a $70,000 Mercedes that would be over $10,000!

Woohoo! The watchmaker I found out on the Eastern Shore has finished with my Breitling and Chronoswiss repairs. I'm going to pick them up tomorrow. Total damager: $382.50. That's over $1,600.00 less than Tourneau was going to charge me. I will be hauling a bunch of other watches and clocks out there to leave with him.

No, the Omega Seamaster professional is a regular watch, but it is a certified Chronometer.

From Wikipedia:

A certified chronometer is a high-precision watch capable of displaying the seconds and which has been tested and certified by an official neutral body (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres - COSC).

Each chronometer is unique, identified by a number engraved on its movement and a certification number given by the COSC. Each movement is individually tested for several consecutive days, in 5 positions and at 3 temperatures. Each movement is individually measured. Any watch with the denomination "chronometer" is provided with a certified movement.

Wristwatches and Pens

Another connection that seems as natural as a shared interest in cars and wrist watches is that of watches and writing pens. Am I correct with this assumption, do many of us watch fans also covet fine pens? In my case, I've always admired the classic Parker sterling silver pens with the find grid pattern - as a child they advertised in National Geographic - so naturally one became my first serious pen for the grown-up world

Please post pictures of your favorite watch and pen combo!

Well you mean 28,800 ;-) - so a little over 2 billion tics in these 11 years.
The Seamaster is running +4-5 seconds a day right now =).

Funny that you should ask. My wife asked if I still wanted a Speedmaster to consummate my master's degree a few weeks ago, but I kind of stopped looking at watches for a while, especially since I just got my Omega Seamaster overhauled last summer. But this piqued my curiosity again, and after looking around at many watches, I let her know that I would like the Rolex Milgauss GV because it was designed with scientists in mind, and what better watch to mark this exciting time in my life. The Milgauss is essentially unaffected by magnetic fields up to 1000 gauss because of its Parachrom hairspring and Faraday cage (soft iron core).

I may start with a Lami pen, and go from there so that I can get the technique down, but I took calligraphy in grade school, so I am sure that I can handle a fountain pen. I have a few friends that write exclusively with fountain pens.
