450 SLC Rally car questions.

I'm interested in building and racing a 450 SLC rally car as we saw in the late '70s. Where could I find specs or build info to duplicate such a beast? What performance options are available for the 450 powertrain?

No kidding! Very cool! I was looking for a nice 5.0 SLC a last year, couldn't find one so bought something else- 2 of 'em (Non MBs) . Even had Sixto helping me in the search -- Dang-it. Wonder what the reserve is, $10 grand?

WOOOO! 5.0!!!!

those are SUPER rare and used to OWN the autocross at starfest and other MBCA events...until the W124 500E showed up.

That's quite an accomplishment: 14 years at the top of the 3 pointed stable.

yhliem,

Having owned one of those in the past can you give us your opinions? Considering it's weight the car must be fast and relatively agile right?

Is everything mentioned in the EBay advert true? Does anythink look out of place?

Definitely looks like an interesting and cool car, if all is matching and correct this car would be a great toy. I wonder how many real miles the car has on it.

Afshin,

Hehehe.... i think you misread my post. i probably didn't make it that clear, but i didn't say that *I* used to own one...what i said was that the 5.0 used to own the autocross events at starfest.

my dad talked to a guy who had one at one of the Seattle Section weekend events. autocross was a cakewalk for the 5.0 until the 500E showed up. the advanced suspension design of the 500 made it far more responsive than the older design of the SLC.

yhliem,

LOL.....Have to slow down when reading some of these posts!

I'm just really curious I think mostly because I have a hard time believing what I read on Ebay. Does anyone else have first hand experience with these cars?

Afshin,

Let me put it to you this way:

If I had the money to spare, I'd go down to check the car out and seriously consider bidding on it. If it IS , in fact, authentic, it would be quite the car to own.

I'm not a big fan of the R107 SLC because the long wheelbase throws out the proportions IMHO, but the 5.0 is rare and collectible enough that I'd go for one.

450 SLC Rally Car

build your own , I bought a 78' with cam chain failure for500$ then traded some for a minorly damaged 560 sel. the all aluminum motor should save some weight plus it has the 4sp. auto. i am looking for some Euro bumpers? anyone? 500"s arent all that common but 560's are a dime a dozen, and with the -24and -25 cams 300+hp. the real rally cars had special 15" bundt-cake wheels. available from the classic center in Irvine, the interior will take the most work, but it keeps me out of bars Rich
