Hi guys..

There's a lot of talk on this b-board, as well as other b-boards (BMWM5.com) about how people beat other cars in races. But have any of you guys ever been dusted? The other day, I got dusted by a Hamann M5 (E39) and it was sad. I was at an intersection and I pulled up behind him. The light changed and he started to pull out slowly. so I changed lanes and started to pass him. I wasn't looking for a race, but obviously, he was. We hit the next red light and he pulled up beside me. He started reving like crazy (damn, those Hamann exhausts are really loud) and the light changed. Right from the start my E320 was no match. He peeled out on first and second gears. Since there were quite a few cars on the road, he had to slow down quickly. That was the only time I've ever been dusted by any other car. I know my E320 is no match to the M5 in the first place, but I tried and it was basically an "eat my dust" M5 show. So all you guys with E55s please take revenge of my defeat... Thanks

Chuck

I am sure alot of M5s have been dusted by E55s as,

1. Not every one is a professional driver.

2. E55 has more torque then M5s.

3. I like Mercedes..

LOL..anyways, don't feel bad. If that guy can only pick on less powerful cars, apparently, he might not be as good a driver as you....

Pulled up to a nice new C5 in the 500E one day. Been used to "dusting" more than a few of them so I wasn't too worried. (some of those exploits covered on this Shop Forum in fact) However, about half a blink after the light turned green I noticed the "Mallet 435" badge on the car. A mental "oh ****" and a few seconds later he was gone.

It happens.... Pick the battles you *think* you can win. Go for some you are not sure of...the more you know the better you can time your matchup. In a 500E your strongest from a rolling start or highway passing. C36/43's seem to do better off the line but not so well nearing triple digits. A M103 300E can dispatch many "quick" cars from a low-medium speed rolling race where it is weaker off the line at past 110mph or so. 400E's do well at anything past 25mph so long as you can pull off the 4th to 1st downshift. Just be careful of fuzz and traffic!

Hope this helps...Lee

Agree. The other day I saw an Blitzs(Spelling !?) dressed up Supra and it was going like 160km/h on Marine drive(UBC area). It was a good thing that I "choosed not to run" with him cause later on a friend told me that particular car had full Blitz installation and produces some 600+ hps. So Unless u are driving a Mclaren these things are doomed to happen sooner or later. However, one thing u can be sure of is that not many other cars can provide the comfort and speed as ur Mercedes can.

Happy motoring,

ET

I was once sitting at a red light next to a 993 Porsche 911 Turbo. For anybody familiar w/ Vancouver's geography, it was at the intersection of Granville and 49th, and I was headin' downtown. I leave the rest of the story to your imagination...

I was waiting at a red light in my Impala SS about 2 years ago. A black boxy looking thing pulls up next to me. Looked like an MB. He inches up to the light in the lane next to me. No problem thinks I, a small insignificant little car...Well, as this little thing blew past me, I read the badge-C36 AMG. I had no idea what it was, but it was FAST! Two years later I'm cruising in my E55 AMG (now I know what they are!!!) looking for the black C36. Come out, come out, where ever you are!
As a side note to this, watch out for twin turbo Supras. These guys pull off the waste gates, disconnect the speed limiter fuse and presto: 450 RWHP!!
As another side, I know a few people who got into some legal troubles posting their over speed limit on public hwy notes to the internet. BEWARE! A guy on the ZR-1 list had to hire a laywer - he got a drag racing ticket and his race was video taped by helecpoter. YIKES!

Way back in 1962 I was driving a friends XK120 roadster with him in the mechanics seat, and a bug eye Sprite next to us at the light started making eye contact and pointing down the deserted straight road. At the turn of the light we quickly realized the tire smoke wasn't ours! When we finally got to where he was pulled over (BIG grin on his face) we discovered the "minor modification" to his Bug Eye - As I recall it consisted of an Injected 'Vette V8 engine, B&M Hydro coupled to an International Harvester U joint and rear axle (No room for a drive shaft!!!) We hadn't noticed the fat Chevy outer rims on Healey centers in the back. Oh well, he couldn't have beat us on a road course - he admitted it cornered like an iceburg.

Hasn't happened to me in the 500E...yet. A Brand-new 911 Aero tried just the other day on a trip out to Lime Rock...and failed. Stuck on him like glue. I'd love to see a fast car driven quickly (and safely!), but the people around here with the nice rides don't drive 'em. Sad.

Unless, however, you include the '58 Oldsmobile with about a thousand horsepower that smoked me at the drags! He came off the line like God Hisownself had booted him in the ass; but I managed to hang on after his initial departure and finish up about a second behind. Then I lined up with a 9 sec. tube-frame maniacmobile on the next run!

However, back in my early 5.0 days (1986ish) I walked away from a big 'ole Chevy Blazer that was being a knucklehead on the highway...only to have John Law pull up RIGHT NOW in a Buick Grand National Turbo Copmobile. Got a ticket for "105+" (he'd only gotten radar on the Blazer; I was doing 120ish and he closed on me at like 145+ I swear!).

Got out of it; good connections

My waiting list to date, (just add money )

91-92 Mercedes 500e
93-98 Toyota Supra TT, 320hp stock
I have always liked the shape of the car and the handling is still hard to beat to date. BTW, you find these on the market for as little as 18k and with a additional 4k in mod's you can have 550 reliable hp. Here is where I wil drop the car off as soon as I get one, http://www.powerhouseracing.com/Main/main.html , 1000hp!!! Yikes, there goes the insurance throught the roof, but you got to have fun on this Planet!

Sorry, no German hardware I know of will touch this. Oops, did I say that, please don't flame me, AHHHHHH, I can feel the heat already.

Very interesting to see a car like this do the Silverstate Run? Hummm, If only I had the moolla .

Well,
I have been dusted too. I know how it feels.
While driving my 96 328i, on a hot day(110 degree), A white cadillac stts or something, with two old ladies inside, stayed beside me. as the light turn green,
I just push the accelerator hard. The cadillac just escaped from stop, passed me easily. Its like a no offense race. Later I found out that The Cone K&N airfilter did not work well on a hot day. Of course, this made me sad too. But its ok, I can find another cadillac later and show him or her the real german machine(three pointed star)

I assumed you got dusted by a Seville STS then... Those STS are very impressive cars. Very capable, but seems to run out of steam too soon. E420/E430 should take on it easy.....

There is always next time

Speaking of getting busted by the Law for posting illegal speeds on public roads, did any of you catch this one: Seems a Japanese guy with a Ferrari F40 was selling a video of himself "cruising" at 300+ kph (187+ mph)on a public Japanese highway. He had 2 video cameras set up -- one looking out the windshield, and one focused on the speedo. There was also audio of him explaining where he was. He did quite well with the video sales, until the Law got hold of one. He was immediately arrested for speeding (obviously) and public endangerment.

Just an interesting story.

I have a question. It is obviously illegal to speed on the highway, etc. but is it STILL illegal to find an empty mall parking lot, and do doughnuts and other messed up stuff? I was once practicing power-sliding in a mall parking lot, and I the mall security guard stopped in a car, and watched me for a few seconds...I thought I was in trouble, but he rolled down his window, and gave me a thumbs up...

DuckMuck,

He must have been one of those friendly Canadian security guards. I walked up to a cop writing me a parking ticket in Vancouver one time. "Next time, [blahblahblah]," and he didn't write the ticket!
