A little over 90mph in 1992 Range Rover. Speedo says 130, tops out at 112. Racing a J**p Liberty. Liberty had nothing. The truck is totally stable at that speed. 6000 lbs or Rover. It takes the wimpy 3.9 V8 a long time to get there though. The 1995 Range Rover does about 115. Both are drag limited. That engine (4.0 V8) is a little stronger, but the message center reads 4mpg when maxed (so I am told)

Maxed out the w116 '78 450SEL a few days ago at 130mph with a slight downhill and then flat surface, gets up there pretty quick and cruised at that speed for a good few minutes. Wierd how the car ran so much better for about half an hour afterwards.

must have been traveling 150mph
Fast enough to stay away from a ticket! LOL! I was traveling back to NC from VA in my hot-rod '70 Dodge truck (short bed) with a big block 383, 474 cam advanced 4 degrees, headers, 780 spread bore double pumper Holly, when headlights appeared from no-where, came up behind me very fast, then started trailing me, getting closer to the rear bumper, so I pulled my Quick-Silver shifter into second gear, pegged my needle at 120 in second gear (with a 2.76 rear-end gear), hit drive and must have been traveling 150mph plus when the car behind me got beside me for about half a mile, then I saw the front end of a Lambrigani (with after-burner glowing) raise up and take off, making me feel like I was going 15 in a 70mph zone!
108mph in my '87 260E with a holly 2bbl carb. mounted to the intake with a 3" adapter....the carb started running out of fuel due to the weak aftermarket fuel pump...but another fuel distributor is on the way!!

165 mph in a 450sel euro, my parents car, passed one cop, he hit his brakes, turned on his lights, then changed his mind. there was 4 cop cars at the intersection 20 miles ahead, they never even looked at me when i drove through, unknown why, i had slowed to the speed limit by then,

I think there would have to be a large speedo error for 165 in a 450SEL. The 6.9's had a top speed of 140mph and they're much more powerful than the m117.
Thanks David

A Euro M117 mill in an S-class (300hp) is hard pressed to achieve ~165. I've seen pics of the speedo in that area and the driver wrote that there wasn't much left to go.

there is a certain hill nearby that I use for "Italian tune ups" My 300SD will make it to 75 mph by the top of the hill... My 300TE gets up to over 95 just before the top of the hill. I've always backed off just before cresting the hill in the gas car... good stuff

Started from about a 25MPH roll at the beginning of the on-ramp after coming through the turn into the straight ramp (sloping downhill) -- imagine you're starting a downhill 1/4 mile run at 25MPH rolling -- right in the AMG V-8's powerband. Let off after touching 115 (my recollection that it came very quickly and without drama other than the engine roar), but was still accelerating very rapidly with a lot left when I shut it down before entering highway (came in coasting over 100 and coasted down to 80).

dslbnz, I thought the factory rating for top speed on an SDL was like 118 or something around there? Do you think your odometer is correct? If so, what have you done to make it do that? turn the full fuel adjustment in some?
Thanks David

Factory spec top speed on the SDL is 119mph (per the sales brochure) and I believe it's gearing limited, meaning if you make more power it still won't go any faster (it will just get there quicker.) I have a hard time believing it was actually going 135 without significant mods, like taller gears or something? I noticed the tach shows 5200rpm, which is probably right up against the governor. Time to borrow a GPS and verify that speedo. If your tires are not factory size, that could easily account for the error, especially at high speeds.
My speedo (1987 300D) reads about 3% slow around 100mph according to the GPS. Per the attached photo, the indicated 124 is awfully close to the factory spec of 129 max speed for my 300D. I forgot to reset my GPS max speed indicator so I don't know what the GPS max was at the time, darnit! (Edit: Stupid forum limit of 65kb won't accept my 75kb photo. Sorry. Why they picked such small limits I'll never know, but it is HIGHLY irritating... I think there's a pixel limit too?) Last edited by gsxr; 06-25-2005 at 01:19 AM. |

Twenty-nine hours from Edmonton Alberta to Stratford Ontario (2,200 miles +/-, I forget exactly) in 1969 in my Alfa-Romeo GTV 1750 (newish car, it smoked afterwards), holding it at 90 mph, I averaged 75 mph. No tickets, although I was stopped once by a cop who was an enthusiast who wanted to check out my car!
Seventy-five mph in a fifteen mph zone in my parents' 1960 Buick Electra 225: five times the speed limit (They were already aboard the train, and had forgotten their camera at home). I made it. |
