I just read the artice on the M3 in the new (november) Automibile mag and in the middle of the article the author Jerez, Spain says "...The new M3 is now as comfortable as the M5. By comparison, the Mercedes AMG cars feel downright crude." I have never been in either when the cars were on the road (just at car shows and at the dealer). But is this guy right? He seems to think that this car is the best ever, just my opinion while reading the article.

What are your thoughts on the subject?

I read the same article and I never test drive the new M either. But logic tells me if the car handles corners as good as advertised, how can the ride is so good that it makes AMG looks crude? Something has to give here, not unless Bimmer has come up with new suspension system that provides both handling and ride at the same time without comprimising one or the other (law of physic: stiff suspension for corning, and soft for comfort). It seems to me the guy is talking with both sides of his mouth like all movie critics. I refer this to Larry's post to people who commented on MB manual tranmission. Just my two cents.

I'll disagree on this one - for YEARS the journalists/critics/enthusiasts that we tend to read and believe are impartial reviewers have noted that BMW has mastered the ability to engineer firm, controlled, SUPPLE suspensions whereas AMG has the firm and controlled aspects covered, but their suspensions tend to crash over potholes, slap hard over expansion strips etc etc. From what I've read, suspensions that allow for imperfections in the surface without disturbing (or at least minimizing) weight load, grip per contact patch etc are much much faster and precise-feeling than ones locked down with too much stiffness (too little damping, valving - whatever you want to call it) that make a car in effect 'skip' over this stuff. I'm certain this particular reviewer is splitting hairs that the average driver will not notice much if any, but as these cars get better and better I suppose everything drives down to minute differences anyway.

I didn't see the article, but I do know that the M3 press event was in Jerez de la Frontera, a city (and region) in southern Spain.

Did the article actually say it was written by "Jerez, Spain," or did you just read it wrong?

Not to be weenie, but in my industry and city, everyone owns a BMW, MBZ or a Jag S or XK8. So you get the REAL scoop from owners, not speculation and opinions.
I can tell you from personal experience virtually without exception, that everyone I have ever met that had a BMW said they hated them with a passion and would never buy another again. One even threatened to punch my face when I asked him how he liked his 730iL. He had just spent $6000 on an A/C system 120 miles after the warranty on his LEASED BMW went out.
They are electrical nightmares. A friend has a totaled 5 series, 1995, in his shop. The insurance totaled it because the wiring harness burnt up to the dash. Ever drive a BMW with over a 100,000 miles on it? Rattle, wheeze and oil leaks galore. You have never heard valve noise till you’ve driven an early 90’s BMW over the 100K mark.
I am working on a comparison list of BMW and same model MBZ's for people to see the resale difference.
From talking to others, I get the impression 98% of BMW owners are new to the high line market and buy them because of the purely biased articles in magazines that always slam MBZ and tout BMW. There is some DEFINATE money going under the table there.
How can anyone explain that these magazines continually leave out reliability and resale of BMW’s tested in every article for the last 15 years?? BMW’s in wealthy areas, that is with areas where people know because of a history of high line ownership’s, has the worst street reputation of ANY make.
When I was in the car business, whenever a trade in came in and had the infamous dash light on, Service Engine, it was an automatic $2,300 hit on the value. BMW has a special tool to turn it off under the car and the light comes on after around 40,000 miles regardless of if the service needs to be done and guess what? It's over $2000 to get them to turn it off.
The only garages here in Brentwood, West L.A. and Beverly Hills with BMW's are new (within 3 - 5 years) wealth or young execs that live in apartments to pay a grand a month for the image.
I took in a 1987 5 series in showroom condition once. We gave him $1,400. This was typical and was and is common place.
That says a world to me about BMW.

Automobile Mag said the same when they compare M5, E55 and XJR. They said that compare to M5, E55 ride is more harsh then M5. But personally, I feel that the firm-padded seat in Mercedes contributes alot more then suspension. I felt that both cars are about the same in terms of firmness, but with Sport Modes on, I actually feel that M5's suspension is more harsh then E55's..

Maybe it's just a personal preference??
