URGENT! Need Opinions
Hello everyone,
I think I've just stumbled upon the steal of the century. It's a 1991 500E which was stolen, but recovered by the police, the garage selling it wants 12'500 Chf for it, approx 8'300$. The car has 96'000 km, needs a right fender and headlight lens, and a good clean up. I think it was a carjacking so no damage was reported to the locks or neiman... I must say that this is utterly tempting, mine now has 138'000 kms, its value has dropped to approx 18'000 chf, approx 12'000$...And I know I got some big, expen$$$ive preventive work to do next year, new chain and harness, for instance.....Plus the stolen car is black with tan interior, my absolute favorite color combination... I would like to get some opinions on the thing. I am very tempted obviously, but at the same time I'm wondering, if the car is easy to fix some garage would have snapped it up by now...(the garage selling it actually burnt to the ground....)... Also, I don't know the history of the car, wheter it was in an accident, how it was maintained, and wheter there are hidden gizmos...Imagine if I stumble upon an ASR-plagued car....cause my car is running strong at the time, the only thing I have against it is an annoying rattle from the seat belt tensioner, plus the aforementioned expensive maintenance coming up.... I'm gonna check the car out on Saturday, if I can I'll take some shots which I'll post on this board.... Geeez I don't know, I got this nervous eye-twitching ever since I saw that ad...I'm experiencing 500E withdrawal symptoms, even though I have one...

Well. I suggest you keep your present 500E...if I remember it looked to be in fabulous shape....and nicely modded.
Why not get the other car cheap, fix it and either dump it or keep it after you figure out if its worth keeping? That black one will need the same maint. sometime in the future...right? Is there no way to have MB-CH or DE tell you thru a VIN search where and when it was serviced at a dealer?
