The HDs will tend to raise the front end of your W124. I have installed two sets on my cars 300E and my 300TE and in both instances it raised the cars at least 1.5 inches. If you car is lowered and yoiu want a lowered stance, install the sport, adjustable konis or the early 500E shocks (firmer then the new ones). But, I'm sure this has been repeated several times. 1994s500, I have a lowered W140 also, and I have not decided on which wheels or shocks to go with please let me know how it works out with you. I am at the very least going with the a set of 19inch wheels staggered if possible.

Just thought I'd put this out there and see if someone knows. I can't seem to get an answer.

I've been told that the 6 cylinder W124's cam standard with 'comfort' shocks and the 8 cylinder W124's came standard with 'HD' shocks. From a previous post, seems that the W140's came with HD's also.

Anyone know?

Thanks,

Craig

I found out that the W140's came with Bilstein shocks. So I'm guessing they are the HD's. I called the store to inquire about the HD's and he mentioned something that they are the same as what I have now. And since I have self leveling, I could only change the front if i had to. but knowing that my shocks are really the Bilstein's, then no use changing them unless they are worn out already, which I think they are not cause i bought the car to the dealer last week and they only recommended the control arm bushings and the rear suspension cells. so I'll get those two fixed and see how much the ride improves. Thanks.

Cardude, I have H&R springs. What springs do you use? I have 20in brabus mono III 2pc wheels but i need to get them repaired cause of dents and rash. I dont think that you need to buy new shocks, since the W140's came with Bilsteins, so i heard. If your ride is bouncy, check the bushings, you might have to change them. also, check your rear suspension, the cells might be faulty also.

DCraig, i think you're right. A guy mentioned that about the HD's being just like my stock shocks when i inquired about the Bilsteins.

OK I'll go with that info. Since the V8 W124 is a bit odd compared to the 300 series, many parts shops, and even the dealer sometimes, is confused. I always double check when ordering a part for my E420.

I 'm using H&Rs also and using the stock shocks and the ride is fine not bouncy at all. I did the rear accumilators about 10 months ago, when I was doing the springs. Also, a complete flush of the system, hmm as complete as I could do. Just waiting to find the right 19 inch wheels. We need a pic of your car.

hmm, the ride isnt bouncy huh. that's good. i think that once my lower control arm bushings get fixed, the ride would get better(i hope). and i also need to get my rear suspension cells attended.
i'm gonna get the wheels back tomorrow from the shop, the people he sent it to couldnt fix them, so i'll try to bring it myself to this other place. hopefully, by next week, i'll get them back, repaired.

On the W124, has anyone had H&R and HD shocks installed, how is the ride and the ride height compared to the stock? I had the H&R installed and need to replace the stock shocks RIGHT NOW, need some advice. If the HD was chosen, will the life of the shocks shorten since the stoke is longer comparing to the sport shock and with the H&R that mean they are constantly in compression?

Personally I would use the Sports, or OE Sportline, but the HD's will also work very well. You know, six of one, half-dozen of the other. I have Comforts with Sportline springs and that combo does NOT work well, not enough damping - just haven't wanted to spend $500 for new dampers all around...!

The HDs+W124 and H&Rs did in fact raise my car higher in the front, than the stock shocks or Sports.

Has anyone tried bimmerparts.com yet? It looks like they have good price on the 'HD' I am interested in.

No, but Rusty (800-741-5252) will beat any price you can find, and FastLane should be competitive too (see link at top of this page). There's something just wrong about buying MB parts from a BMW site...

From what I'm hearing here my 400e must have the HD shocks. The front end does sit a bit high and my ride is firm - but I'm not sure how much of this is simply that I have 205/55/16 instead of stock. My car has excellent high speed stability and takes corners surprisingly well.

Thumbs up Me too

You should feel my E320 with the Eibach springs and the HDs. :p These W124s sure feel great if you tighten them up just a bit.
