Storing car for a year...
Hi everyone,
Here's the deal. I've been working on my 16V for the past 8 months. I'm rebuiling the engine and installing a turbo. But, I've run out of time... See, I'm leaving for a trip to Thailand in two weeks--actually, I'm moving there because I'm going to be teaching at a school there for almost a year. So, now my car has to sit in storage for a year. The engine is completely assembled and in the car, but a lot of things still aren't completed, yet so it can't run yet. I haven't turned the engine over with the starter and there's no oil in the engine yet. But, obviously, there's assembly lube on the bearings, etc. So, what should I do before I put the car in storage? Is there anything I should spray in the cylinders to keep everything protected? Should I put antifreeze in? etc.. Thanks guys!

1) take off the wheels and store them stacked up with plywood underneath each wheel - this is to avoid flatspots.
2) store the car on jackstands - because you'll have the wheels off 3) ensure that the gas tank is full - will reduce the amout of moisture absorbed into the gas and helps keep it from turning into varnish - there are fuel stabilizer additives that you can buy, but to use them properly would require you to run the car for a period of time so it's a moot point. 4) ensure that ther eis antifreeze in the block - helps prevent corrosion 5) change the oil - dirty oil = bad 6) remove the plugs and squirt some upper cylinder lubricant into the cylinders. - don't forget to replace the plugs 7) ensure that the brake and clutch master cylinders are full of brake fluid 8) spray the engine with WD-40 to inhibit corrosion in the engine bay 9) wash & wax the car. also clean the interior. do this early in the day to allow sufficient drying time. 10) keep windows and vents closed to keep insects and other assorted creepy-crawlies from entering 11) buy some desiccant sacs and place them in the interior and in the trunk of the car. - ensure the trunk (or boot) is clean and dry 12) get a good quality, breathable car cover 13) if you find the concrete on which you park your car sweats, spread some cat litter under the car to prevent the moisture from getting to your floor pan 14) disconnect battery 15) STORAGE INSURANCE!

Daniel ... I stored an engine for two years with assembly lube and spraying WD40 into the cylinders and replacing the plugs. Worked great.
