500E/400E Universal Oxygen Sensor aka, O2-sensor
Sears didn't have the 22mm oxygen-sensor socket, but Kragen did ($13) much
cheaper than the Hazet/Stahlwille equivalent ($30+). _ I was able to change out the O2-sensor in our 500E without loosening/dropping the exhaust, cut-off the connector, and solder in a BOSCH 13275 4-wire O2-sensor ($45 vs. $120) from a 1995 Dodge Caravan V6 3.8L, check connector connectivity, and torque to 55Nm. I did the OBDII drive sequence (even though the USA W124's didn't have OBDII) just to see if the "CHECK ENGINE" light would come on, and she's been happy for the last couple of days. BTW: use heat-shrink tubing on all solder joints, and be sure to use the protective fiberglass cover. I use a pair of hemostats to hold them back while soldering. :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

BTW: here's the OBDII drive cycle aka, test cycle:
RUNNING AN OBDII DRIVE CYCLE Suppose youíve "fixed" an emissions problem on an OBDII-equipped vehicle. How can you check your work? By performing whatís called an "OBDII drive cycle." The purpose of the OBDII drive cycle is to run all of the onboard diagnostics. The drive cycle shold be performed after youíve erased any trouble codes from the PCMís memory, or after the battery has been disconnected. Running through the drive cycle sets all the system status "flags" so that subsequent faults can be detected. The OBDII drive cycle begins with a cold start (coolant temperature below 122 degrees F and the coolant and air temperature sensors within 11 degrees of one another). NOTE: The ignition key must not be on prior to the cold start otherwise the heated oxygen sensor diagnostic may not run. 1. As soon as the engine starts, idle the engine in drive for two and a half minutes with the A/C and rear defrost on. OBDII checks oxygen sensor heater circuits, air pump and EVAP purge. 2. Turn the A/C and rear defrost off, and accelerate to 55 mph at half throttle. OBDII checks for ignition misfire, fuel trim and canister purge. 3. Hold at a steady state speed of 55 mph for three minutes. OBDII monitors EGR, air pump, O2 sensors and canister purge. 4. Decelerate (coast down) to 20 mph without braking or depressing the clutch. OBDII checks EGR and purge functions. 5. Accelerate back to 55 to 60 mph at æ throttle. OBDII checks misfire, fuel trim and purge again. 6. Hold at a steady speed of 55 to 60 mph for five minutes. OBDII monitors catalytic converter efficiency, misfire, EGR, fuel trim, oxygen sensors and purge functions. 7. Decelerate (coast down) to a stop without braking. OBDII makes a final check of EGR and canister purge. |

Where did you buy your O2 sensors? That’s a great price! I need to order (2) of them.
I’m debating on the Y pipe as a replacement of my center muffler, wondering if it will be too loud, I’ve got a RennTech rear muffler (resonator) and don’t want the any low booming resonance under 3000 rpm. Thanks, Frank

Kragen is a "McParts" retailer like "Pep Boys" and "Schucks" and remember "Grand Auto".

does universal 02 sensor work?
What is the long term opinion of the universal sensor zMod on your 500E as I am getting ready to do this myself.
I was assuming that splicing the hasness downstream of the connector would allow for soldering to be done on the bench. I assume that the tool you purchased was a standard O2 intallation tool?

It's been over 3-months now and no problems or CHECK ENGINE lights.
For the 6-cylinder W124 cars, people have been using the 3-wire Mustang 5.0L HO O2-sensor for years without problems. Re: the tool, it's the tall cylinder-like O2-sensor. A crows-foot will not get in there. :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

Thanks
Thanks for the quick response and I will post any further questions or results when I do this in the near future.

I got the O2 sensor for 32.75 and the socket for 10 Bucks so I am a happy camper. Thanks for your help and if we ever get within 50 miles of each other I owe you a beer.
