One Lap of America Results
Let me be the first to report that our very own 500E jockey Michael Curcio and our ex 500E jockey Alan Tackman appear to have finished 21st out of 84 on the OLOA...
Congratulations and good job guys, can't wait to read all about it. Please post a story or two! I didn't see any MB cars in the results however... Rgds, Chris W. '93 500E |

Chris/All,
Well, it's finally over . Tough crowd - I saw driving that I didn't think possible. Wow. Crappy weather for many of the stops (Road America, Memphis, BeaveRun) but we soldiered on, as did every other Lap Dog. And the resourcefulness stories alone are worth the entry fee. Ever had your 2-piece front rotors come apart on the road, then figure out a way to fix them? Ever wad up a car, tow it home, then pick up a duplicate vehicle & get to the next track on time (hitting a strip club along the way)? How about break an exotic BBS rim, then figuring out a way to get a Greyhound bus to deliver a replacement to a local tire shop, and to have that shop open early to mount it? How about blow up your tranny, then rent a truck to tow your car home, R&R the tranny & rebuild it, then rejoin 2 tracks later? Absolutely great event - unbelievable cars, great people (if a bit crazy) and great tracks. Not to mention a seriously quick Porsche to do the Lap in! Too bad neither of us had any seat time in the car prior to the event, or we think we could've done a bit better. Not much, though! Well, there's always next year! OLOA
Hi All
My Thanks to Michael for a great effort and his support. Its not easy being a codriver/ lap puppy. He can talk anyone out of anything- as was evidenced by his garnering of multiple sponsors for our car and the enroute Hooters girls photo shoot. He is now an offical Lap Dog. And please do visit our website for some stories and photos. Although we finished 21st overall and 10th (of 28) in the top GT-1 class- the Porsche is certainly capable of a higher finish. Getting the car completed the day before the event was not very helpful. To finish in the top 10 (which was our goal) the event requires a LOT of prepartion (including predriving as many tracks as possible before the event) a VERY capable car, NO driver errors, NO mechanical issues, some good luck both on the track and over the transit sections and in the weather, and even some bad luck for your competitors. The difference between 10th and 25th in many events was less than 2 seconds a lap- so one mistake, one instance of not being sure where the course goes next, etc means 10-15 finishing positions lower. Go too conservative or too hard and you are toast. Believe us, its harder than it looks. As for MBs it would take a seriously modified MB to place high overall- or even in the Luxury sedan class- I doubt my old E60 would be quick enough. A Supercharged C32 or CLK55 would be a good start. Next years event will most likely start in the midwest (at the tire Rack or Road America) and go to Calif and include Laguna Seca and other Calif tracks. Anybody up for the challenge? |

I'm in!
Now, I just need a competitive ride to lavish sponsors on...
