Kickdown VS Manual shifting in 500E

Is it just me, or does anyone else notice that when you manually downshift, the car pulls harder than when you let the tranny kickdown and do the work itself? This is especially noticable in my 500E. If I'm crusing and kick down via the tranny, the momentum is gain slowly and steadily. However If I manually shift it, the torque is felt and speed is gained in a more urgent fashion. What gives??
