500e - how hot is too hot

I just relocated my 92 500e to the Tampa area from Las Vegas - so it's one hot climate to another. My car regularly ran in the high 90's in temp at freeway speeds (air conditioner on low). I had my radiator replaced to get rid of some blockage as a preventative step (car has 149k and the radiator was original) and had water wetter put in.

Now, in Tampa, under similar driving conditions (freeway speeds, air conditioner on low), I'm still running about 95 degrees. When I get off the freeway, I almost immediately exceed 100 degrees, sometimes getting as high as 110. I haven't ever seen it go above 110 and it seems to stabilize around 102-105 for "around town" driving.

Is this something I should be worried about? If so, what steps do I need to take? I'm new in my area and don't have a local Benz mechanic as of yet. I plan to contact the MB Club local chapter for recommendations.

Thanks in advance.

Too hot ?

Hi,
From what I know, a 95°/100° engine temp is normal.
The fans are supposed to kick in at about 104°.
So if you go up to 105°/110°, I would think it is quite normal.
Over here, temp don't get very often over 30°, and my car usually runs in those ranges, so...

I'd start getting nervous if it ever goes over 110C. And it shouldn't get that hot unless it is REALLY nasty outside, and you're stuck in traffic with the A/C on... using synthetic engine oil, synthetic tranny fluid, and RedLine Water Wetter with only ~20% antifreeze will all help keep temps down.

Search this forum for "piggy tail" and you'll find all the info you need to decide if you want your car to run cooler or not, for about 40 bucks. It's a simple mod that turns your aux. fans on at a lower temp. I love it.

I'd have the entire cooling system reviewed for proper factory operation:

clutch fan, thermostat, electric fans (proper cut-in), relays, water pump, pressure test system, etc....

...then whatever temps your 500e are rolling will be the lower possible...

hope this helps

We are playin' in C and not F here right? In the winter when it is a bit chilly, 1-5C, my coolant temperature floats a little above 80C...during the summer when it is around 15-20C, I've noticed the coolant temperature just up to slightly below 100C...

gsxr suggestions are. . .

right on. Give those a try especially the WW and 'thin' your af/water ratio to 30% or so. That will make a big difference.

Then try my Cool Harness (click "www house" icon). It will turn the fans on earlier and with both techniques, you shoud stay in the mid 90s C.

In my case the WW and 25/75 coolant/water ratio made no real difference.

On the other hand, I can't praise Jim's Cool Harness enough. It was easy to install and gave extremely satisfying results. The fans on my car would now turn on at 100c instead of 107, and they would spin for approx 40-50 seconds to 90c.

I remember having to wait for going through the Gotthard tunnel on a scorching higway, 31c outside temp, no shadow, AC on, alterning between full stop and creeping a couple of meters...
It lasted three full hours, the temp needle never got further than maybe 102c.
