FYI...I received two compliments on my 16v today, both from BMW drivers! The first was from a similar era M3 driver on the Bay Bridge (gave me a beep and thumbs-up) and the second was from the driver of a 90's three series while I was parking. As far a repairs, my experience with this car has been that somewhere around 100K, lots of small things will become troublesome, mostly odd electrical things (there are many posts here addressing the various and sundry items). Depending on how the car has been driven, you may have to do some valve work owing to carbon buildup. If you say up on the minor items (for about 30K) then you break through to where most of the repair items are regular maintenance items (misc rubber parts, fluids, etc). My car has almost 165K on it, and the car drives stronger and better than when I purchased it at 110K. Mind you, I have some added do-dads, and I had the exhaust valves replaced about 20K ago. The only other odd things is that the car is now very sensitive to gasoline formulations: I used chevron premium forever, then suddenly my car started stalling at stop lights and having trouble starting. I swithed to 76 and the problem disappeared. Used chevron again, problem came back. Back to 76...no problem. I suspect that cheveron changed their additives/formulation. If you are interested in modifications, I would guess that the 16v lends itself to that more than the 2.6. There are a number of shops that still make performace stuff for the 16v, even though it is a 15yr old car. The 16v handles just great and the 2.6 (unlike the 16v) never set any land speed records. Some may be consider it to be a little under powered, by that can be rectified by some of the various performance accessories available for the car (muffler, EVOII headers, computer work, turbos, etc.

FYI, While the 190E 2.6 did not SET any land speed records, I might add what Frank Barrett says in his book ;
" With Sportline and the right tires, a good driver can at least equal the times of a 190E 2.3-16 "

I've always wanted a 190 16v...

Hopefully one of these day I will have a chance to find a clean one. In other words to get a go signal from the boss (WIFE).

But E_dream,

if you have a 16V, you'll probably going to burn your 2.6. I also have a Toyota that I can't kill it, but the 16V is so different, there is something about it that you don't mind to spend the money, just like when you're in love your don't care to take your girl out.

i love my 16v. this pearl black one is actually my second one. my first one was a smoke silver late '87 with tilt sunroof. but some dumb ***** rear ended me and insurance totalled the car. that car had about 167K miles and was very quick. my new one is an '86 with about 90k miles...after the first one got wrecked, i couldnt see myself getting anything else but another 16v. it may be under powered, but with the right driver can be very quick. heres a few pics from my track event at Sears Point.

Lightbulb pads/ suspension

I use Rofren track pads (thanks to Michael Curcio and Toby )w/ 400E front pinchers. These pads work great for me on track. Stainless steel brake lines w/ blue fluid. Suspension on the car is Sportline springs, 500E front shocks, Bilstein HD rear shocks, 27.5mm front sway bar w/trusses, 16V rear bar w/ adjustable end links, adjustable chassis bars front and rear, adjustable camber plates front, wheel alignment is not factory spec.

impressive...keep up the good work. right now im running PBR metal master pads for track and street and motul 600 fluid. its not bad, but i cant get on the brakes too hard evertime or they start to fade close to the end of the session. would b nice to upgrade to 400E brakes and stiffen the sway bars up. maybe even get some adjustable spring perches from speedybenz or delsing motorsports.

Cool track stuffs

currently chopping a set of 500E springs for a little stiffer ride. Also gonna try ta get 4 degrees negative camber up front, hehehe. The current suspension really keeps the hoosier tires planted in the turns
