Lightbulb Aftermarket engine management systems...

Aftermarket engine management systems...
I have a 1973 450 SL w/D Jetronic, it seems to me that the price for the OEM ECU or MPS for that matter, you could buy an aftermarket engine management system with a new manifold pressure sensor but utilizing all the other sensors and a programmable ECU. My question is has anyone on this board done this, and how hard was it?

I replaced the CIS injection on my Porsche 928 with an Electromotive engine management system. However, I used the intake, throttle body, and 60 less 2 flywheel from a later model fuel injected 928. You will need to custom fab a throttle position sensor, crank position sensor and timing teeth on your crank, and have someone custom fab the mounting points for the fuel injectors as well as custom fuel rails, new injectors, MAP or MAF sensor, and ........ It will be waaaaay cheaper to replace what you have and may be even more dependable. I replaced mine because my CIS system would no longer support the hp in my new engine and did not give me enough flexibility for supercharging or further modifications.

I replaced my factory computer in my 90 model 928 with a Motec, and used the factory flywheel sensor, factory HALL effect sensor, and used a GM Throttle Position Sensor, factory water temp sensor, and added a GM air temp sensor. I went this route as the factory system would not do what I wanted to do with my project. I made the harness and used larger injectors, and Ditched the Mass Air Flow sensor and used 2 GM MAP Sensors, one open to the air and one connected to the intake via a vacum line.

All I suggest is that this is not the area to try and buy something cheap. This controls your engine. A cheap system that fails could destroy an engine.

I have a friend turbocharging a Dodge Neon and he is using some really cheap management system. One of his cylinders leaned out and detonation occured and destroyed the head of the engine.

I am running Haltech E6K. I can use the stock TPS and hall sensor for ignition triggering. All the rest is GM equipment. To make it work though, the intake manifold has to be modified to except injectors and a fuel rail must be made. It may seem easy enough when you start off but it will turn expensive!!

Sterling, did you use heat shrink tubing all over your harness? What did you use to heat it?

Yes I did use heat shrink, but its an industrial version. I used a heat gun on it... this stuff would laugh at a hairdryer.....

For replacing the D-Jet I would recommend the SDS. It is affordable and you don't need a laptop to tune it. I am going to do the same on a Euro 450SL with D-Jet (since no one has the right computer in the USA) I have installed the sds on many cars. It uses GM sensors and they are easy to get. The hardest part on most cars is getting the TPS set up (Throttle Position Sensor on the Throttle Body) once you get that you're home free. (sometimes it is easier to get a GM or Ford T-Body and swap it out.)

I will be supporting the MegaSquirt efi units. More info can be seen on the 190revolution.net board. I worked on the earlier versions back in 1995-6 when it was in its infancy. but these guys have come a long way. The tech help is tremendous and software is incredible.

Old Thread but I was wondering how the D-Jet conversion went? Also has anyone tried this with the MB MFI cars such as the W108 280SE and the M-100 6.3 with the injection pump?

The best bang for the buck by far is Haltech. You can use the Haltech E8 for an 8 cylinder which is what is going into my 190E 16v as we speak. The electromotive only allows you to use their ignition coil packs, while Motec and Haltech can use any ignition system. Motec was just too expensive for my tastes and included many features that only Formula 1 cars need. Check it out, by far the best, and not a build it yourself like Megasquirt (although it comes out to a similar price in the end).
